North of Somewhere (A Short Continuation) – (Chapter: Exams Are Not For Lovers…)

She had wrapped up her last final earlier in the day and she felt like it went in her favor. Now all she had to do was wait patiently for Lindsay to get home so they could celebrate together.

“Linds, is that you?” Spencer yelled, hearing the front door open and slam shut.

“I missed it. I missed it, Spence,” the blonde said as she stood in front of Spencer.

“You missed what…besides me?” Spencer replied with a grin.

“Cute, but I’m not in the mood.”

    “What happened?”

“My final, I missed it. I showed up an hour late. No students, no professor, no exam. And you know what this means? It means no more scholarship, no more UCLA, no more roommate.”

“I don’t understand. How did you miss it?”

“Oh, I’ll tell you how I missed it, Miss Carlin…as a matter of fact, I’m thrilled that you asked.”

Spencer swallowed hard, knowing she was somehow at fault here.

“Remember asking to borrow my bike yesterday?”

    ‘Um…yes.”

    “Remember me saying yes?”

    “Uh…uh-huh.”

“Remember running over a nail and flattening my front tire making the bike completely useless to a girl who needs it to get across campus in a hurry to go take her final? Remember that, Spencer?”

    “No.”

“Well, you should. You ruined my life, I would hope that you would at least remember the details.”

“Linds, listen, I’m sorry. I had no idea the tire was flat.”

“That’s only the beginning. I was ten minutes late to class…”

“Wait, I thought you were an hour late. Ten minutes isn’t so…”

“I wasn’t done,” Lindsay interrupted with an insincere smile.

    “Sorry,” Spencer replied, sheepishly.

“Thank you. As I was saying, I was ten minutes late to class. During that ten minutes my professor changed the location of the test. She and the people who showed up on time, who obviously do not have girlfriends who apparently hate them, journeyed down the hall together to go take the final in one of those fucking media rooms. It took me approximately 45 minutes to find out this jewel of information and when I finally did, it was too late.”

“Lindsay, I am so, so sorry. I mean, I don’t know what to say.”

“Don’t say anything, Spence. Don’t say anything at all. Ever. Never ever. I don’t even know if I handle the sound of your voice right now.”
