“Kim?”
“Yeah Kerry.”
“I’m glad that you’re coming back … to Chicago.”
Kim sighed, hoping that Kerry hadn’t picked up on it. She heard what Kerry said, but couldn’t help but note the sadness in her voice.
“Kerry, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Why would you think something’s wrong?”
“It may have been a long time, but I still know what you sound like when something is bothering you.” She hesitated, choosing her words carefully. “Friends talk about things, Kerry. I want us to be able to talk to each other.”
This time it was Kerry’s turn to sigh. “Kim …”
“Kerry, are you sure that you’re okay with me coming back?”
“What? Oh Kim, of course I’m happy about you coming back. It was great to see you last week.”
“Then what is it?”
Kerry had been sitting on her bed when she called Kim. Now she was lying down and she turned to look at the picture of Sandy. She gave in.
“Is it ever going to stop hurting, Kim?”
Kim closed her eyes and leaned back on the couch. For a psychiatrist, sometimes you are so clueless.
“Sandy?”
“Yeah.”
Their voices were quiet now, like they had been when they used to lay next to each other in bed. Kim pushed that thought out of her head.
“Kerry, have you seen anyone? I mean professionally.”
Kerry turned to stare at the ceiling. “Kim, if this makes you uncomfortable.”
“No, Kerry, I want you to be able to talk to me.”
“But?”
“How did you know there was a ‘but’?”
“I know what you sound like when there’s going to be a ‘but’.
“Are you trying to be funny?”
They could each tell the other was smiling. They knew how they sounded when they smiled.
“Yes, Kim, I saw somebody professionally for awhile. Yes, I did get something out of it. No, I’m not still going because I found that I got even more out of spending that time with Henry.”
“I can’t wait to meet him.”
“Kim, I really am glad that you’re coming back.”
“Me too, Kerry.”
“I’m also glad that we’re going to take another crack at this friendship thing.”
“Me too, Kerry.”
“But Kim, that’s all I can do right now.”
Kim couldn’t help but notice the ‘right now’ part of that statement and she felt her stomach flipping around again.
“That’s okay, Kerry,” Kim replied and was sure she had heard Kerry yawn. “You should get some sleep. It’s late there and I have quite a few clothes to bid farewell to.”
“Good night, Kim. Thanks.”
“Good night, Kerry. Sleep well.”

NOOOO R/NC-17 for a long long time, please. Your story kicks ass and gets better with each installment. I can hear Kerry’s voice like my tv set is on. KUDOS. Don’t be tempted into rushing things, though longer installments would be oh-so-welcomed. ;-) You have my complete and total attention, and I will confess to checking for updates several times a day! Truly wonderful story. God, I wish the L word people would take a lesson and get B&T into a story as interesting as this.
Hi Rocinante…I enjoyed this chapter. As you know, I’m not much of an ER watcher, but I’m glad you’ve gotten into writing some fiction. Thanks for indulging my B&T obsession. You’re the best! And don’t listen to Honda about posting longer chapters and/or more frequent installments. You keep working your cute little butt off so you can keep me in the style to which I would like to become accustomed!
Kim have to be patient with Kerry and her situation she is not feeling able to another relationship soon but like she said “right now” they maybe geting to know and spending time together that time to be together will come..baby steps for them..im glad you back and great chapter post as soon as you can thanks
