    The Return – (Chapter: Ten)

“How about 7:30. That’ll give me time to get home and get things started.”

    “Sounds great.”

And then there was silence on the line.

    “Ker, you still there?”

    “Yeah.”

    “Was there something else?”

    “No, just wine.”

Kim put her feet back on the floor and sat up.

“I meant was there something else that you wanted to talk about. I get the impression you’ve got something on your mind.”

Silence again and Kim wondered what was going on.

    “Ker?”

“I was thinking that maybe it could be a date.”

Kim let out a breath louder than she had expected or wanted to and hoped Kerry hadn’t heard it.

“If not, it’s okay. I understand.”

“Kerry, I would love to have a date with you.”

This time it was Kerry’s turn to let out the breath she felt like she’d been holding all morning.

“I’ll see you at 7:30, Kim.”

“Have you lost your ***** mind?”

    “Kate …”

“No, I don’t want to hear it. Kerry Weaver, Kim. The woman broke your heart and almost destroyed your career.”

“She did not almost destroy my career. In fact it turns out that she ended up putting hers on the line to try to save it.”

“Kim … please don’t do this. You can’t go through this again.”

“Is this from you or Christy?” Kim asked her friend across her dinner table.

Kate pushed her plate of Chinese take-out away.

    “I haven’t told her. She’s gonna freak.”

Kim leaned forward trying to stay calm.

“It’s different this time. She’s different. She’s out, she’s comfortable with who she is, and we can try again without all the bullshit of her closet or Robert Romano.”

Kate just looked at her friend and noticed something for the first time that evening. Kim had this look in her eyes that she hadn’t seen in … five years. “Oh my God, Kim, you’re still in love with her.”

Kim leaned back in her chair and sighed.

“I think so. At least that’s what I told Henry.”

    “Henry?”

“Her son,” Kim replied, smiling at the memory of playing with the toddler. “He’s two and adorable and I told him that I think I’m still in love with his mom.”

“Well, it’s official. My friend the psychiatrist has lost her mind.” Kate said standing up and heading for the bathroom. As she passed, Kim reached out for her arm.

“Don’t tell Christie. At least not yet.”

“Don’t worry. You’re the crazy one, not me.”

    1. Always happy to find more of this has been posted. Seems very geekily in character for Kerry, asking if it can be a date — even if Kim had to drag it out of her. Plus the Kim/Kate topper…well done.
