Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 19: We’re Not in Kansas Anymore)
He reached out and touched her arm, her skin softer than he had anticipated.
“No sweat…I really hope you feel better Spencer…really.”
He jingled his keys in his hand, and with one last glance of support at Ash, he hopped in his van and headed back down the street.
The upstairs bathroom door shut softly, the sound of running water and a faint cough from Spencer was all Ashley could hear. The sounds were real, yet seemed so utterly far away. Ashley’s brain could not comprehend the sight before her. She turned and headed back down the stairs, fearful her brain had been playing tricks on her just moments before.
Empty pizza boxes and beer cans cluttered the kitchen countertops. The air smelled stale and putrid, as if something was rotting underneath the floorboards. She walked to the refrigerator, her heart skipping a beat as her foot kicked a bottle, which slid rapidly across the tile, slamming into a cabinet door. The fridge light poured onto the kitchen floor and counter, revealing three shelves stocked to the brim with beer cans. A half empty plastic bottle of ketchup rested inside the door, the lid riddled with icky red goop, crusted to the cap. The cold air filtered out into the room, matching the temperature of Ashley’s insides as she stared at Spencer’s sole source of nourishment.
She let the door shut on its own, a faint shaft of moonlight from the living room window illuminating a post-it note stuck to the refrigerator door. Ashley recognized Spencer’s mom’s handwriting. Her eyes looked away, the jumbled mesh of words not needing to be read or explained, as Ash was able to fill in the blanks on her own. A quick calculation concurred that they had been gone for over a month, judging by the date of the note.
Hawaii, Cancun, the Philippines, whatever; Paula and Arthur were ghosts in this house, the only evidence of their existence were memories that Ashley kept filed away for a rainy day. A stranger would doubt their existence, Spencer’s house very much a movie set, complete with backyard pool, a cat named Jeepers, and post-it notes complete with a “xo, love you, mom.”
Ashley glanced up at the ceiling, hearing the creaking sounds, knowing Spencer was out of the bathroom. Ashley leaned against the counter, her eyes having adjusted to the darkness. The prickly needles once again attacked her upper chest, noticing the broken glass and busted picture frames that littered the dining room floor. She approached the mess and picked up a cracked frame, careful not to cut herself.

I can’t get enough of your story or your writting. Great! is all i can say! That and I hope Spencer does get help, and Ashley is the one to help her get there!
Love it. Absolutely love it. Your way of writing is soo unique. I’m not going to lie, I was a little confused and hesitant in the beginning chapters…but now I can’t get enough. And I’m not going to lie again…I still am kind of confused about Spencer, so she kicked her out of the ‘pack’ because she is in love with her?? Does Spencer love Ashely and she is just terrified shitless of it? Anyway…I’m sure just like you have proven…everything shall prevail! haha…post more SOON!!
Are you a redhead by any chance? For whatever reason, I imagine that you are a redhead. And you definitely don’t seem like you live on the west coast. You seem more like you live in New York or someplace similar. The more I read from you, the more addicted I become to this story. Similar to all of your other readers, I’m confused about what exactly happened to Spencer, Ashley, and Aiden to have made them all change so much. I’ll just be patient, though, because I’m sure everything will make sense as the story goes on.

wow that was one hell of a chapter. just wow. I seriously got chills when Spencer’s hand was shaking holding the water. I liked knowing what was going on in both of their heads. Spencer in the bathroom after kissing Aiden, her eyes on the cross while she vomits…that was just amazing really. I am very happy that Spencer recognizes that she needs help and that she is possibly ready to receive help from Ash. I just hope she really can. I’m again speechless, I just love this story so much. Thank you.
