Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 21: Good Mornin’, Good Mornin’, It’s Great to Stay Up Late…)

Spencer looked pale and sick, seemingly having just come out of the girl’s bathroom. They didn’t say much, Ashley’s tongue fidgeting with her retainer and Spencer utterly fascinated with her shoelaces.

The covers began to shift and Spencer pulled her hand out and placed it on top of Ashley’s, her eyes closed, not saying a word. Headlights from outside flashed through the window and trailed along the wall, disappearing behind Spencer’s desk. The vehicle’s tires crushed over asphalt, tiny pebbles and rocks heard as they mashed into the ground. The engine began to fade away, part of Ashley wishing she could go with it, away from Spencer’s house and all the problems that rested inside it.

Spencer’s hand was rubbing the top of Ashley’s, her fingernails dragging along her skin. Neither girl had felt someone’s touch in so long. A touch that meant something, emotion and premeditation behind it, motive, not just a forced action that didn’t require much pre-thought or planning.

Ash watched Spencer’s hand, studying the wrinkles and lines, wondering how many of them were new, having crept quietly to the surface unseen and undetected by Ashley’s eyes. Each line represented a journey, or at least a battle, and Ashley had missed out on so many she couldn’t count.

Spencer’s hand stopped. Her breathing was heavy, but normal, her mouth slightly open. Ash removed her hand and watched as hair fell back over her face, hiding it from view.

Satisfied that she was not going to wake up anytime soon, Ashley stood, knowing what she had to do.

She decided to start in Spencer’s room first, seeing as the girl probably wouldn’t wake up for awhile. Her eyes rested on the desk that sat against the far wall. It would be easiest to go around the room counterclockwise, she decided. Besides, she preferred to be on the side of the room that Spencer wasn’t facing. It made her sick to think it, but Spencer’s presence made her nervous, as if her body would suddenly rise off the bed, shuffle over to Ashley, drool cascading off her chin, her beautiful blue eyes now a pale gray, focused intently on Ashley’s neck, where she would take a giant bite the size of a Frisbee.

The desk drawer opened with a squeak. Ash’s head jerked back towards the bed, Spencer not moving.
