Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 37: Vignettes)

Struggling, her arms and legs flailed, a sob rushing forward from her lips, her hands pushing herself up from the pile of celluloid, stumbling towards the door. Her chest heaved, a sheen layer of sweat covering her cleavage and thighs, her bra and underwear clinging to her body.

The mess just laid there, chaos amidst order, her perfectly aligned wardrobe hovering above the disarray of memory that she had forced out years ago.

She became aware of something on her hand. Glancing down, she saw it; stuck to her slick hand, covering the aging lines and light purple veins, the picture’s contents facing away from her, as if wanting to surprise her.

But she knew who it was, who it had always been. Peeling it back from her palm, she locked eyes with her maker, the beautiful white dress blowing in the breeze, her smile wide with prediction, knowing full well what would happen that summer, teasing the onlooker with her secret.

The picture fell from her hand, fluttering towards the floor like a butterfly, where it rested alone on the carpet, looking up at her.

The wall began to chip and crack, bricks edging outwards from its foundation and plummeting to the ground with a clink. The mortar began to crumple, each red block wobbling and shaking, ready to break.

She glanced down the hallway to the back patio door. The sun was filtering through onto the tile.

Her feet slapped against the ground, her eyes straight ahead, past her husband who lay in a chair, his drink in hand, eyes glued to the television.

The sun struck her skin like fire, her cold, unfeeling skin absorbing the heat like a starving desert.

Her fingers trembled with excitement as she dropped her clothing to the cement floor, a slight breeze engulfing her scorching naked skin.

She plunges off the lowered cement edge, the wind through her hair, striking water below, plunging to the bottom of the pool.

He watches from inside, his drink sitting on the glass table near the door, palms pressed against the window, confused, unclear. Something is happening; something is changing.

She doesn’t look back, and he’s afraid to follow.

    ‘If I could start again
    A million miles away.’
