Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 37: Vignettes)

His eyes fall to his shoes before his neck slowly rises, removing the glasses on his own, his eyes inches away from hers, staring deep within her, forcing his chest open, allowing her to see the black and dirt that resides inside. His voice sounds hollow:

*"Fear no flood in stormy weather
Fear no fire if winds arise
Flesh and blood, I’m yours forever
    And forever, it never dies

And if your goldmine comes up empty
I’ll be there to work the claim
    If you’re a captain of a shipwreck
I’ll be first mate to your shame"

Her eyes opened wide, her lower lip shaking, the impact of his words striking her in the center of her chest, and forcing her eyeballs back into her skull.

He turned with a sigh, the glasses back in their proper place, as he watched the lights twinkle against the moonlight.

‘I wear this crown of thorns…upon my liar’s chair.

    Full of broken thoughts.

    I cannot repair.’

Her breathing began to slow, the meaning of it all resting thickly upon her shoulders. The tears trickled down her cheeks, understanding what was happening. Knowing now that what she had feared secretly was in fact true, that Aiden could not just be her friend, that their relationship was but an eternal struggle, and that it was she who must break free from his clutches.

She followed his eyes out onto the towering mounds that framed the valley. His words still lingered, like faint perfume, forcing the moment to linger.

She turned abruptly and grasped the sides of his face, leaning in and kissing him deeply, forcing him to kiss her back, her fingernails digging into the skin of his cheeks, wanting him to feel something; anything.

    “I’m sorry,” she said.

He pulled away slowly, his emotions hidden behind the dark glasses, only to lean away from her, the palm of his hand trailing over the browning grass.

She waited a moment and then was gone.

He listened to her shoes crunching along the path until it faded from earshot.

The lights twinkled against the hills, reflecting off his glasses, bouncing back out into space.

His fingers crumple up the paper, his own handwriting smudged and fading from wear, a layer of his fingerprints and tears embedded within the folds and creases.
