    The night is too dark, too spacious, too quiet, and you’re not there to hold me.

    It hurt. It hurt so damn much that she wished that rage would come back and usurp these other emotions that were tearing away at her. ‘Why Spencer? Why not me? I deserved this not her. How could anyone do this to her?’ She knew that there were strong arms enfolding her small frame. She knew they belonged to Aiden. She could smell his cologne and the coppery scent of blood on his shirt but she just couldn’t feel his warmth. All she could feel was the pain in her eyes from clenching them too tight, the burning in her lungs from not taking a proper breath, and the phantom weight in the palm of her hand from where the gun used to be.

    “Aiden.” a voice that sounded a lot like Dano’s spoke, cutting through the still air that surrounded them.

    Without taking his arms from her, she felt his head rise and turn, she lifted her own head from his chest to look at her friend. It was obvious she was shaken. Her chest heaved with deep breaths that she inhaled through her nostrils, they flared out like that of an angry bull. The white beater she wore was splattered with blood spots and her posture wasn’t straight and commanding like it always seemed to be; her shoulders were drooping under the weight of what had just happened. The only thing that held some sort of resemblance to her usual demeanor was the glint in her eye. It was sure and intense and brought a sliver of comfort into her uncertain world. Dano knew what to do.

    “We’ve got to get him out of here and take Spencer to the hospital.” her voice was calm and never wavered.

    Aiden nodded and released Ashley from his embrace to walk with Dano. Together, the two of them walked to the back of Dano’s car, opening the trunk and removing the cover where the spare tire should have been. Rather, what was there were clothes of all different colors. The streets were a place of learning, the school of hard knocks, and if you didn’t keep up with the rest of the class you would end up in one of three places; the hospital, the penitentiary, or the cemetery. Changing clothes to throw off the cops when an All Points Bulletin came over radio with your description was something that the dark skinned girl learned early on.
