Beyond My Knowing, chapter 36
On the way there, Kes paused and looked up. A ship was coming in for a landing across town. This was the first time she’d been so close when one had arrived. They were far enough away from that part of the city though that Kes wasn’t too concerned, but, all in all, it wasn’t necessarily a good thing.
Several tense and wary minutes later, Kes and Artem arrived outside of an old building that looked like it was lived it and well kept up, though some of the buildings around it definitely looked abandoned. They were getting close to the part of the city farthest from the mines with the most unused buildings though, so that wasn’t a surprise. Kes read from Janarin’s mind that this was where she lived with her brother… and his husband.
They lived out here because, while male/male couples were largely tolerated, they weren’t exactly generally well-thought of, and it was often wisest to do little to call attention to yourselves if you were in such a coupling.
Janarin, Kes was fast realizing, had fallen in love with Thalla, or at least that’s how she thought she felt… like she wanted to marry her when they were older, and be like her brother and his husband were. Like she wanted very much to kiss her, and to be able to protect her and keep her for herself. She hadn’t spoken of what she wanted, except to her brother in private. Her brother had blamed himself, because he had been his sister’s only example. He didn’t think it was wrong of course, quite the opposite in fact, but he was still scared of what could happen to his sister because of it. Thalla didn’t know, or, at least, Janarin hoped that she didn’t know. Female/female couples, after all, tended not to be tolerated at all if they were discovered. Some sects were better about it than others, having been more influenced by other races that they traded with, her brother had told her. The Ogla, their own sect, weren’t the worst about this, but were far from the best. Migrating to a different, more tolerant, sect wasn’t a very good option though, because leaving your sect to join another usually wasn’t easy to accomplish. Especially not under the Ogla’s current maj, who valued loyalty highly. It could sometimes be a death sentence if not handled correctly. As things stood, at best, assuming Thalla even might return her feelings, if discovered, she and Thalla would be given or sold to interested males ’for their own good’. At worst, they could be badly beaten or even murdered.

Oh no,never this easy. THALLA is going with them but the self-doubt is there and knowing how JANARIN feels towards her is enough for her to seek out her mother. KES should be wary of that ship, just a feeling like it isn’t what she thinks it is. Say your goodbyes and go and hurry.Loving this story.THANKS,ps.
