    Beyond My Knowing, chapter 36

The kiss ended and Janarin looked happy and hopeful and Thalla felt lightheaded. Had she done the right thing kissing her, she wondered? Did she, could she feel that way about her? She really should know that. But… she didn’t know if she could feel that way about Pajel either. She wasn’t even sure she knew what feeling that way about another person actually was. She knew that Janarin was her best friend though, the person that probably mattered most to her out of anyone, and she felt like she had to be loyal to that before anything else. Because that’s what Janarin was doing for her, had always done for her, when even her family really hadn’t.

”I want to go with you.” Janarin said.

”Um, go where?” Thalla asked, her mind not having caught up quite yet.

”To the Ocampa city, under the surface. I want to go with you. I… We can be together there.” She said meaningfully. This was everything, Janarin thought to herself. Her brothers would understand that she didn’t say goodbye to them. She could leave a note. Oreth would be happy for her like she’d always been happy for him and Vashin. Her brother had fought and clawed his way to a life with Vashin, taken more than one beating for it. She’d always wanted to be like him, seen how he was with Vashin as her ideal, and now was her chance.

Now Thalla felt even more lightheaded. ”Oh, um… yes. You can come, um, you can come with us.” She said, not able to meet her friend’s eyes. She didn’t even know if she wanted to go. An alien woman had come to her door with her brother and suddenly this was happening. She… She needed to talk to her mom. ”I need to talk to my mom.” She said softly, finally daring to meet Janarin’s eyes. There was entirely too much faith in her there. She felt like she’d been cruel to her to kiss her like that if she hadn’t been sure of herself, even if it had been to make her feel better. She hadn’t thought it would make her feel quite that much better. But, she didn’t really know that she couldn’t… marry Jan. Maybe she could. Maybe it would be better that way, in fact. Maybe it would even be a better life in this… city under the surface.

She thought of Pajel and Caya and Kaylin and, gods, Oreth and Vashin? ”Wha… What about Oreth though? You… can’t just go and leave him without even saying goodbye. He’ll go mad. You know he will.” She reasoned, maybe even pleaded.

”He’d do it for Vashin if he were in my place. I know he would. I’ll leave word for him. He’ll understand. He’ll be happy for me.” Janarin told her with conviction. This was happening, she told herself, and she wouldn’t let it not happen. She’d make it happen, do whatever she had to. Just like her brother had.

”I… I um, I need to talk to my mom.” Thalla said, getting up and going back into the house.

Janarin got up, now confused and insecure and followed after Thalla, wondering if she were reading things all wrong. She told herself she wasn’t, but she, all the sudden, she wasn’t so sure of things anymore. ’I thought it would make you feel better’ Thalla had said. The words that she hadn’t really understood before came back to Janarin and she felt the pain of them. Had that been all that it was? But, she’d kissed her back though… She trailed after Thalla and tried to keep her spirits up.

    1. Oh no,never this easy. THALLA is going with them but the self-doubt is there and knowing how JANARIN feels towards her is enough for her to seek out her mother. KES should be wary of that ship, just a feeling like it isn’t what she thinks it is. Say your goodbyes and go and hurry.Loving this story.THANKS,ps.
