    6 Months- chapter 16

I have spent countless hours thinking this through and know that I played the pivotal role in ending our relationship, but it was Tina and me together that got us to that point.

I don’t think that either of was conscious of our actions.  For the last two years or so, we operated on autopilot, never really shaking things up, lives becoming staid.  I believe that Tina tried to address this with therapy, and who knows if things would have turned out differently had been more patient, but that does not matter, because I was not and for that I feel truly sorry.

Even while going to therapy, an example to an outsider that we were trying to help our relationship, we were not.  I don’t know that Tina would agree, again, another pointless question, but even the sessions were rote.  As soon as we left, we would drive home or go back to work, simply assuming the same destructive characteristics that would ultimately end us.

My indiscretion, as unforgivable an act as it was, simply confirmed the destination that we had been heading toward.

I do not wish to belabor this point, but did want to offer a one sided explanation, as futile and pathetic as it sounds.

Before coming to New York, I had tried countless times talking to Tina, tried to reason with her and knew that before I came here, was spent in those efforts.  I believe that Kit finds me a coward, not only in giving up on Tina, but conveying all of this to you in a letter instead of just telling you.

During the six months that Tina and I were apart, I wanted the three of you to be there for her as I knew that she certainly wanted absolutely nothing to do with me.  I wanted the three of you to fix what I had broken, fix what I could no longer fix myself.  Seeing Tina in the state that my actions left her was unbearable.  I knew that each time she saw me, it was like another dagger to her heart.  I felt that if I did not do something drastic, she would never heal.
