    A Night in the D — Chapter 23

I imagined her life, probably unfairly, thinking she wouldn’t fit into mine, though why I’m imagining fitting her into my life in L.A. is another question. She busted me, momentarily hated me for it, then hated me again when it reoccurred to her, and yet still can’t not say that she wants me more than anyone she’s ever met, though she has every reason to protect herself only, which she seems to be doing by shutting down in the bathroom at this bar, though I’ve been invited in to witness it as if I weren’t the provocation. She wants to feel safe and nothing she chooses is.

And if she thinks for one second that watching her lose it in this way is not compelling, she’s wrong. She makes me feel like the fickle finger of fate flipped her off and she can’t look away. And neither can I. She makes me feel like the air she breathes is infected by her desire for me, and when I lean close to her I feel the same way and want only to take deep breaths of her. She smells like hotel soap, and some unenhanced essence of her own, and my pants are too long on her, now tucked under the heel of one shoe, and I want to hug her for it. For approximately ever.

    “Tina, turn around.”

Bette said the words again and again got no response but silence. I should feel impatient, she thought. Exasperated. Fatigued. Heedless of her worry, insistent that she please get the fuck over it if she wants to get laid, which I know she does. She looked at that grungy boy like she might kill him, and I knew she hated him before she said it, and I loved it, and when she said she dates men, I felt like killing all of them, including him, which is a way I never feel. Threatened. Insecure. Not really. And yet I’m beginning to be jealous of whatever gaze she’s directing down the drain and not at me and I’m bothered that I can’t get her to turn around, not because she needs to look up and tether herself to reality but because I want to be the only one who can make her do so.

    1. You are killing me with this!!!lol i love it to bits BUT your killing me… slowly i might add!this time i really cant wait for more ….well not too long anyway!

    2. There are a few places I can think of where I wouldn’t expect something sweet and lovely to happen, and restroom in a bar is one of them. But you pulled it off. Bette’s walls seem to have crumbled to the point that she is able to start wearing down Tina’s.

    3. WOW…that was amazing. Bette’s walls are coming down and Tina’s on shaky ground. Both realizing the intensity of it all and still wanting to go on. Please continue.

    4. WOW! Absolutely amazing, powerful, engaging and unbelievably captivating writing! Each line, every turn of phrase evoking a more intense image of each of the characters. Thank-you.

    5. That was just about the most intense scene I’ve ever read or witnessed. It felt as though I was looking at a movie or a highly charged scene playing out right in front of me. Wonderfully written. Can hardly wait until they do get together again and make love because that is what it is now. Lovemaking, not just sex. Those two are really hot for each other in more ways than one. Thanks for the post. Post soon please.
