    A Night in the D — Chapter 22

    (Previously)

Bette shuddered for what seemed like the millionth time in hours. “Can you call me out over drinks, Tina? It’d be less disturbing.

“Maybe you need to be disturbed.”

    “Who says I’m not already?”

“Then drinking won’t help,” Tina scoffed. “You’ll get drunk and do something stupid. And I’m not going to be your drunk fuck, hate to tell you.”

“You’re not a fuck, Tina,” Bette said in a suddenly grave tone. (Her grave maybe.) “You’re not.”

“Is that why you were crying in the bathroom earlier?” Tina tilted her head.

“God,” Bette said laughing, “Call me out over drinks. Please. It’s so much more merciful.” She smiled. “My treat.”

Tina stared back, unsmiling, as she considered the offer. “I’ll buy my own,” she said, unzipping the skirt and slipping it back off, tossing it towards Bette on her way to the bathroom. “Find me something to wear.”

    ************************************************

They went to a martini bar. Tina didn’t drink martinis but she had a feeling LA girl did. And she was right. Dirty ones. Bette scanned the menu and picked the one she wanted, then tweaked it slightly in charming conversation with the server, a twentysomething grungy boy who maintained inappropriate eye contact throughout. Tina bristled. For a quick moment she wanted to be back in the hotel room, stifled by desire and even near panic, but with Bette all to herself. No young males to contend with. No boy twinkling his blue eyes at Bette, who smiled broadly but with indifference. Tina noted the indifference. It should have been comforting, and it was, sort of. But her mind went back to the thought she’d had so many hours ago, about crawling all over Bette, and the very fact that she couldn’t do so now, in this public place, irritated her. She wanted to have a drink, get a buzz, and then poke at the guy for flirting with her girlfriend. Which Bette wasn’t.

Tina stared at the server as he walked away. “Nice ass?” Bette asked.

“Huh?” Tina looked over in surprise, offering a distracted half-smile. “Him?”

    “Yeah.”

“No, I wasn’t looking at him. Looking through him.”

“Oh?” Bette said. “Boxers or briefs?’

    1. Hey hey! I had thought maybe you chose to quit this story. Sorry about all the crap that’s happened the past few weeks. :( When you sent Tina to the bathroom I thought she might run away through the window or stay for a couple of chapters to sit and think.

    2. It’s a very good point. You must find someone have something threatening first, then you could feel threatened. Is that what they say ‘love your enemy’? I’m so happy to see your new update. I hope you’re doing well now.

    3. Sorry about all the fun-squelching turmoil you’ve had to trudge your way through to get back here…I’ve really missed this story. The excellence of your writing is still blowing me away. Please keep the winds howling!

    9. All of this tension is getting to them. All of their preconceived notions of one another is driving them second guess themselves and their feelings. Let’s hope they can overcome this and finally get together. Thanks for posting, and sorry about all of the BS happening — it gets better.

    10. love it…and i missed this story…they sound like an old married couple a little, playing with each other even though they are serious…i thought bette would tell tina to come with hre to LA…is there a chance she will? glad you’re back
