    A Perfect Design–Chapter 4

Bette giggled and took the plans unrolling them and laying then out in front of her. After looking over them for a few minutes Tina was getting nervous.

”You don’t like them?” Tina questioned afraid of Bette’s reaction.

Bette didn’t respond right away but instead kept looking back and forth at the drawings. Tina leaned back in her chair defeated.

”Tina these are amazing. For you not to have any design background I’m really impressed. I think these are going to work. I just need to get out to the property and survey it but looking at these I think we can work with your design. I wouldn’t have to change much at all”. Bette said finally looking up at Tina.

”Oh Bette. You really think so. I have put all my dreams into those designs”

Bette smiled then looked back at the plans.

”It really shows. I mean wow. Just wow. Is there anything you can’t do Dr. Kennard?” Bette asked playfully looking back up at Tina then noticed Tina’s face immediately go from a smile to a frown ”Did I say something wrong?” Bette asked

    Tina shook her head

”No. It’s just when you asked is there anything I can’t do. I was thinking about-” Tina began but was interrupted by her cellphone ”Excuse me a minute” Tina said reaching for her phone and stared at the number puzzled not knowing who it was and then answered it.

    ”Hello”

    ”Tina?”

”Yes. Who is this?” Tina asked.

”It’s Chris. Please don’t hang up. Your Mom gave me your num-”

Tina immediately ended the call putting the phone on silent and set the phone down. Bette watched as Tina sat stoic and silent.

”If this isn’t a good time Tina I can take these with me and we can still meet on Sunday”

Tina slowly shook her head and watched her phone as the number that just called popped up on her screen again.

”No I don’t want you to go. I’m sorry about that. Now where were we?” Tina asked watching the call go to voicemail.

”You were telling me that you were thinking about something when I asked you if there wasn’t anything you can’t do”

Tina felt an overwhelming urge to tell Bette about Jacob even though she barely knew the woman sitting across from her but also felt now was not the time and after receiving that phone call from the one person she thought she would never hear from again just complicated things.

”Oh it wasn’t important. But what do you think about my design for the two labs. Will they work?” Tina asked changing the subject.

Bette smiled knowing Tina was upset by whoever phoned her and decided that it wasn’t any of her business to ask and looked back at the design.

”I think the designs are perfect. The actual layout may have to be altered for one reason or the other but I don’t see any issues right off hand”

Tina smiled and patted the table.

”Great!” Tina replied then noticed her phone had received a text. Tina sighed and grabbed the phone to read the message.

    He was my son too.

”No he wasn’t!” Tina blurted out angrily causing Bette to jump.

”Tina are you ok?” Bette asked cautiously as Tina felt suddenly embarrassed by her outburst

”Oh Bette. I’m sorry. Look I need to go ok. I need to deal with something. I’ll call you later. And thank you so much for doing all of this for me” Tina explained getting up and walking over to Bette as she planted a quick kiss on her cheek and then left out of the cafeteria.

Bette taken by surprise placed her hand on her cheek where Tina’s lips had been and watched as she walked out of the door as her own cell phone began ringing. Not bothering to look at who was calling she answered it.

    ”Hello”

”Jesus Porter. I’m starving to death here”

”Alice I’m sorry. I’ll be there with your food in 20 minutes ok” Bette said in a sad tone

    ”Bette? Something wrong? You ok?”

”Uhm? Yeah I’m ok. I’ll talk to you about it when I get there ok?”

”Ok” Alice replied as Bette hung up the phone.

After rolling up the plans and grabbing Alice’s food Bette left the hospital and headed back to Alice’s.

    5. Harley96 so glad to see you back and posting again. I love this story and im so happy to see you writing again. I love the whole concept of this story. Tina dealing with so much grief and being a guardian angel to so many others, now being able to find her own savior in Bette. Please post soon!

    6. Harley,

I believe that I absorbed the fact in the phone call between her and her mother that she hasn’t cleaned out her deceased son’s bedroom, much less belongings in all these years. Now, that’s creepy, very creepy, and interesting that Tina has this dark side of denial, or at best severe procrastination, not too mention a very patient Mother.

You foreshadowed a lot in the story with cracks, and buildings, and space being sought after and constructed. I definitely felt the presence and pressure of building things and emotions. Then, I wondered about the lake – a completely different image and thing.

Especially so, since you spent time on it being discussed and somewhat constructed in both character’s minds at the end. Now, I wonder what you have planned for the new lake. It definitely rules out drowning, as the cause of death for Tina’s young son, because she would be much less friendly toward those still waters.

As before me have said: Nice job, happy to read more when you post, and interesting beginning.
