    Across the Pond

Peggy had been living in London for the past several months but she and Bette still kept in close touch via emails and spoke at least once or twice a month. With the time 6 hour time difference Bette usually called her adopted mother upon rising at 6am Los Angeles time which was 12noon in London. She could usually find Peggy in her office at that time so she dialed direct instead of going through the receptionist.

    “Peggy Peabody.”

    “Hello Peggy its Bette.”

    “Bette darling how are you?”

    “I’m doing great. How’s London?”

“A bit dreary. I can’t wait to get back to New York.”

    “When are you coming back?”

“I need to be here for another month. How are things at the gallery?”

“Fantastic. I’m preparing my next emerging artist exhibit. Her name is Valerie Simmons. I think you’re going to want to collect her work.”

“I don’t doubt that dear. You have impeccable instinct when it comes to new talent. When is the show?”

“It’ll be in a couple of months. I’m planning a private exhibit and artist dinner for a select few of my top collectors before we open to the public. I’d love if you could come.”

“You know I’ll be there. Send me the details once everything is finalized and I’ll make arrangements.”

Peggy looked up and noticed her daughter Helena hovering in the doorway. She waved her into the office and indicated she should take a seat.

“Listen Helena just walked in, which reminds me. I’ve been meaning to tell you that she’ll will be moving to Los Angeles temporarily. We’re merging with Shaolin movie studios and she will be heading the project.”

    “I’ve heard.”

“How did you hear? I didn’t know you kept up with entertainment news”

“I don’t usually but Valerie Simmons’ best friend and housemate is an executive at Shaolin. Her name is Tina Kennard. She told me about the merger and mentioned that she’d be working with Helena. I met Tina at the Venice Art Walk where I discovered Valerie’s work. Afterwards I had dinner with both of them and we made the deal. I can’t wait for you to see Valerie’s work Peggy and wait until you meet her. She’s a sweetheart. I’m sure you’re going to love her. “

    1. I dislike this version of Helena. When she is disowned and then finds redemption, she is a much more likable person. You’re writing this story so wonderfully. Please PS.

    2. Your Authors Note to us Tibetters noted but my response to the last sentence was – so what! When you Love all things are possible with effort!

I would like Helena a little softer. Perhaps that’s because I’m a Brit and got to like her after she took her hooks from Tina.?

      Always loved Peggy!

Liking the story and await next instalment.

    3. This was an interesting chapter. I liked it.
I’m glad that we saw little better what Peggy and Helena’s relationship, although it was not a surprise: not a model mother-daughter relationship.
I agree with the others, I don’t like this Helena. The compassionate and considerate Helena much more sympathetic to me! This the arrogant and competitive not. Bad enough that Ilene so shaped Helena’s character: always competitive and envious with Bette. But I think they’re more different personalities.
Helena goes after Tina… Poor Tina doesn’t know what will hit her :)
I look forward to the next chapter.

    4. Like Bette I think Helena’s ‘alpha’ character also suffered an injustice and character assassination by the writers when she was transformed from such a formidable persona into a pathetic drunk, sex slave to Catherine and an emotional wreck after the fiasco with Dylan. I didn’t like any version of Helena and I hated what she did to Bette and how Tina changed when she was with Helena. Helena’s appearance changed the tide of the show. Her character’s introduction of debauchery and immorality took away any respectability that I had for Tina and in my opinion for the entire show as the storylines became more degrading. Then her personality change was so drastic it was as if they wrote a new character into the story but kept the same actress and the same name to play a different role. The Helena in this story is reflective of the ‘scum of earth’ even worse than she was on the show, but she does find redemption eventually. I hope my version rings a bit truer when you see the change. Thank you for reading.
