    Bette’s point of view


    She just winked at me. On the heels of telling Helena she had never been committed to her, she winked at me. I don’t care who’s on the phone right now, I’m so flooded with a sense of adore for this woman I can’t help reacting. I return to kissing the skin of her belly and move up to her breasts again. Tina places her hand over her breast to keep me from touching it with my mouth. She clears her throat in an effort to cover up any untoward sounds that may escape from her as I continue to tease at the back of her hand.

    "Listen, I have to go," Tina said abruptly. "We’ll talk when you get here."

    She hung up the phone and placed two fingertips underneath my chin before raising my face up to look at her.

    "You are incorrigible," Tina said. "She knows something’s up; you didn’t have to try to make me react into the phone."

    I crawl up her so that I am lightly resting my body on hers, and my mouth is by her ear.

    "But I love to make you moan," Bette whispered. "It tells me I’m doing something right."

    I do. Love to make her moan I mean. From the first time I made love to her, I thrilled to hearing her responses. And this afternoon – God this afternoon served as sweet reminder of what I’ve been missing.

    "We’re not done yet are we?" Bette asked between kisses along Tina’s neck. "Please don’t tell me I have to go."

    "I thought you had an appointment with Foxworthy?"

    "I don’t have to leave for an hour and a half," Bette replied.

    "You’re certainly going to have something to talk about," Tina said with a smirk. "I’m sure he’ll have a field day with this development."

    I wonder if she’s trying to steer the afternoon in a more serious direction. I know we need to talk. I know it better than anyone. But our intimacy is another path to reconciliation, and that has been the focus this afternoon.

    "May I continue?" Bette whispered the question in her ear. The implication of exactly what she wanted to continue was perfectly clear.

    "Since when do you ask for permission?" Tina replied back quietly.

    "I feel as though I’ve forfeited any privileges I may have had with you," Bette said.

    I do feel a bit lost in this situation. She has been the aggressor this afternoon, and I’ve been the prey, skillfully captured and guided by her will. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen her as a person of strength. I felt like I had to shoulder the burden of our problems, because she was too fragile to handle it. But that was an image I had foisted on her; it wasn’t the truth. Her resilience after our separation proved just how strong she is. And alternately how weak I can be.

    "Consider your privileges reinstated," Tina said with a smile. "We’re not going to solve all our problems in the next hour and a half, but there’s a lot we can accomplish in that length of time."

    Is there ever. I’m being given a second chance. It’s all I can ask for right now. I only need to prove that I’m deserving of it.
