    All the Small Things–Chapter 9

A week later, exactly four months after they first met

Bette Porter sat in Phyllis Kroll’s office, coffee brewing near Phyllis’ desk as Bette’s semester report lay nicely on the mahogany table. Bette leaned back on her chair, watching the pot on the coffeemaker as the steam came out. Phyllis looked over her shoulder and got the pot, pouring both of them a mug of coffee. She handed Bette the jar with the creamer and watched as her full-time lecturer and newest dean of the School of Arts mixed the creamer with her coffee. She had just promoted Bette recently, after learning that Bette already sold the gallery to the Peabody Foundation because it gave her too much stress, especially when combined with her teaching jobs. Bette also told her that she dropped her other teaching jobs at the other universities. She looked somewhat happier than she did a couple of months ago.

But Bette was far from perfect. Phyllis easily saw through the tension that had been building up in Bette. She snapped more easily at meetings. Students began to talk about long, ‘absurd’ sermons. Faculty members were wondering if Bette was still pining for Jodi Lerner.

“Bette,” Phyllis said, mindful of her tone. “Do you know why you’re here?”

Bette wasn’t even looking at Phyllis. “The financial report is due today.”

Well, she was right. In some sense of the word. “Yes, but there was something else.”

Bette then looked up from her coffee cup and looked straight at Phyllis as though she were just a student in her classroom. “Okay. What is it you want to talk about?”

“Are you still in love with Jodi Lerner?”

“Phyllis, what is this about?” Bette asked, exasperated. “Should everybody pry on my life? It’s over. It’s been over for quite sometime now, okay? I don’t want to hear any of it.”

“Okay. I’ll take you up on that one. Then why are you so agitated?”

“I’m not agitated.” Bette said. “Do I look agitated?”

“A little restless, but not enough to make me ask you to see a doctor.”

“Fine.” Bette exhaled. Phyllis knew how and when to get it out of her. “What do you want to know?”
