An End Has a Start – Part 10

    “Mama. Mama B!”

“Hmm?” Bette twisted around in her seat to look at Angelica.

“I’m hot. Put on the air,” Angie demanded with the imperiousness of an almost-four year old only child accustomed to getting her own way.

“No baby, we’re almost home.” Bette was too tired and edgy to bother correcting Angelica and telling her to say “please” and not just make demands. Angie had been getting away with a lot lately, eating what she wanted, speaking however she wished to her mothers. Bette didn’t like it, but she was hot too, and didn’t have the energy to reprimand her daughter. Bette sneaked a glance at Tina, who was wearing her sunglasses and keeping quiet. Apparently, Tina didn’t have the energy for it either.

They had packed up their belongings from their hotel suite, paid up, and were headed home now. After being stuck in traffic for a while, they were finally on the move again. It wouldn’t have been safe to open the windows up in the middle of a traffic jam, but there was certainly enough free-flowing air now to mitigate any exhaust.

    “Mamaaaa,” Angie whined.

Bette was about to put her window down when Tina wordlessly snapped on the air, adjusting the setting to high. Bette hated when Tina did that, it was a drain on the gas and a waste of money. Not to mention, Tina had just undermined her in front of their daughter. Bette didn’t argue though, just sat back and closed her eyes. She couldn’t wait to get out of this car.

    “We’re here,” Tina announced.

Bette’s eyes fluttered open and she was looking at her own home. A mix of sadness, nostalgia and familiarity rose up in her. They hadn’t been away for very long, but she was glad to be back. And glad to see my own car, Bette thought as Tina parked rather crookedly behind the Lexus and turned off the ignition. Something gently clanked under the hood as the engine wound down.

Bette jumped out of the car and saw about getting Ang freed from her car seat. She set her daughter down on the lawn and watched as Angie went running to the front door.

    1. Great update omalley! Your description of Bette’s panic was palpable! I can understand it…being the one to find Jenny and trying to revivie her…that’s a sight she will remember for the rest of her life.

    2. Wow… I can even feel the heat and tension just reading about it. Great update. Bette is a little caught up with herself again. Tina deserves some comfort from her too because they both lost someone in their house…

    3. So weird and freaky for the family. Tina seems to be the stable one of the three. Poor Bette is still reliving the opened eyes of a dead Jenny. I once pulled a woman out of the gulf and performed CPR. Those eyes still haunt me to this day but I had different result, the woman survived.

    4. Whoa. I could feel the panic, the near-claustrophobia… What is Bette going to do? Actually, what has Bette already done? I’m nervous. pps, pps, pps. And for good measure… pps. Great update, thank you.

    5. Great update. I feel bad for Tina – she has to be so strong for both of them it seems and no one seems to realize that maybe he needs some comfort too. She did loose her friend after all.
