An End Has a Start – Part 10
“Get off my property or I’m calling the police,” she said loudly.
Tina was peeking out of a nearby window. “They’re still standing there,” she hissed.
“I said get OFF my PROPERTY or I will CALL the POLICE,” Bette repeated.
She waited for a response but there was only silence.
“They’re leaving,” Tina affirmed from her vantage point.
Bette sagged against the door in relief. Angelica, sensing the excitement was over, wandered away.
“That was crazy. Who the hell do these people think they are? Isn’t there some kind of law against turning up on private property with a camera crew?” Bette looked at Tina in disbelief, then frowned when she registered the sheepish expression on Tina’s face.
“What, T? Why are you looking like that?”
“Well…”
“You didn’t call them, did you?”
“No! Of course not.” Tina looked aghast. “But…” she shrugged. “I wasn’t surprised to see them. I saw the house on the news last night. They were updating the case ‘on location,’ the newscaster said.”
Bette grunted in disgust. “Thanks for letting me know, T.” She flapped a hand toward the door. “I don’t want these…. these vultures anywhere around here.”
“News is news, Bette. It’s not a specific campaign against you.”
“Did I say it was?”
Tina pulled the sunglasses off her head where she’d perched them and put them down on a nearby end table. “Look, I don’t want to fight. I’m hot and I’m tired. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, okay?”
“Forget it. I’m going upstairs.”
Bette trudged up the steps to their bedroom. She felt the need to look around, to reassure herself of her surroundings, and maybe check to make sure there were no wayward policemen in her home.
She drew a breath and poked her head into the bedroom. It seemed slightly stale, but that wasn’t all. There was a queer feeling in there; something was off. She reasoned that it was that strangers had been in the room, rifling around, but it felt like something else. Something heavy and oppressive. It was eerie. She crossed the room and opened the door to the balcony, hoping to disperse the mixed smells of new paint and wood and linen that still lingered in the air. Bette kept her eyes down, resolutely not looking toward the pool. She backed out of the room and clattered back down the stairs.

Great update omalley! Your description of Bette’s panic was palpable! I can understand it…being the one to find Jenny and trying to revivie her…that’s a sight she will remember for the rest of her life.
Omally…wow…on the edge of my seat. The tension you create feels so real. Can’t wait for next chappie. Happy Mum’s day to ya!
Great update, feel so bad for Bette and Tina , I think that staying in a hotel was not such a bad idea…looking forward to the next:)
Excellent as always and very realistic!
awesome job! lol update soon :)
Wow… I can even feel the heat and tension just reading about it. Great update. Bette is a little caught up with herself again. Tina deserves some comfort from her too because they both lost someone in their house…
So weird and freaky for the family. Tina seems to be the stable one of the three. Poor Bette is still reliving the opened eyes of a dead Jenny. I once pulled a woman out of the gulf and performed CPR. Those eyes still haunt me to this day but I had different result, the woman survived.
Superb writing!!! PPS!!
This story is amazing. Please continue!
What a horrible feeling??? Been there done that. Go back to the hotel or rent an apartment. Great update. PPS
OMG. This story is so friggin’ great. Realistic, painful and authentic.
Good job – very true to their characters, including Angie’s innocence – ‘”Mama, I want to go swimming. Can I?”
Cinematic in its pacing, I could feel the eerieness creeping up my neck. How will Bette survive? Expertly done!
This is such a great story. So awesome! Thank you and can’t wait to read what happens next :)
Whoa. I could feel the panic, the near-claustrophobia… What is Bette going to do? Actually, what has Bette already done? I’m nervous. pps, pps, pps. And for good measure… pps. Great update, thank you.
Great update. I feel bad for Tina – she has to be so strong for both of them it seems and no one seems to realize that maybe he needs some comfort too. She did loose her friend after all.
