An End Has a Start – Part 10

Tina and Angie were in the kitchen, the little girl drinking juice as Tina hunted through the fridge, tossing wilted vegetables and leftovers into the garbage. She glanced over her shoulder at Bette.

“We’re going to have to go shopping,” she said. “There’s nothing decent to eat here.”

“We can order in,” Bette murmured, smoothing the top of Angelica’s curly head.

Angie looked up at Bette. “Mama, I want to go swimming. Can I?”

Bette’s heart lurched and she gazed down at her daughter, unable to look away, horror struck. No way was she letting Angie get into that pool… Jenny’s grave.

“No.” Tina’s firm voice cut through the silence. “You are not going swimming, Angie.”

    “But I want to.”

    “I said no, Angelica.”

The little girl pouted and looked to Bette to veto Tina’s laying down of the law. Seeing that her other mother was remaining silent, she slid down off her chair and moped out of the kitchen.

Tina sighed and looked at Bette. “Well, you know I had to. Even if she hates me for the next five minutes, there’s no way I’m letting her in the pool. God knows what’s in the water. That reminds me, I think we need to see someone about… draining it or something. I was going to anyway, because of the move, but now…” Tina stared out of the glass doors to the pool, falling silent. “We can’t have that water back there. Hopefully the police have gotten everything they need. The sooner we get it closed up, the better.”

“I had forgotten about that,” Bette said absently.

    “About what?”

“The house. Selling the house. The media, the publicity, the cameras… the fact that it’s a crime scene. On top of that, this horrible housing market we’re in right now… T, how are we going to sell this house? Who would want to live here?”

“It’s a beautiful house, Bette, newly remodeled and everything. The only thing is the damn pool and the balcony… Oh, shit! The balcony! Angelica is upstairs!”

Bette jumped off her stool and raced up the stairs. “Angelica!” she shouted. “Angelica, where are you?”

Tina was running up the stairs behind her. They split off in separate directions at the top of the landing, Tina went to Angelica’s room and Bette threw their bedroom door open and scanned the room wildly, looming around the balcony area. It was deserted and hot out here. She could see waves of heat distorting her view of the pool area below. The same suffocating presence she’d felt earlier when she’d come up here was back, only stronger now. An involuntary shiver crept up her spine.

    1. Great update omalley! Your description of Bette’s panic was palpable! I can understand it…being the one to find Jenny and trying to revivie her…that’s a sight she will remember for the rest of her life.

    2. Wow… I can even feel the heat and tension just reading about it. Great update. Bette is a little caught up with herself again. Tina deserves some comfort from her too because they both lost someone in their house…

    3. So weird and freaky for the family. Tina seems to be the stable one of the three. Poor Bette is still reliving the opened eyes of a dead Jenny. I once pulled a woman out of the gulf and performed CPR. Those eyes still haunt me to this day but I had different result, the woman survived.

    4. Whoa. I could feel the panic, the near-claustrophobia… What is Bette going to do? Actually, what has Bette already done? I’m nervous. pps, pps, pps. And for good measure… pps. Great update, thank you.

    5. Great update. I feel bad for Tina – she has to be so strong for both of them it seems and no one seems to realize that maybe he needs some comfort too. She did loose her friend after all.
