    An epistolary affair

    Dear Bette,
Up until this morning, I have been revisiting the moment I mailed my letter to you.
I had stepped out onto the street and had quickly located the nearest mail box. The insignificant blue metal box, battered by the elements and defaced by misspelt colourful graffiti. I remember standing in front of it and lowering the trap drawer.  I looked at the envelope for the last time. I knew its content off by heart, as I had read and re- read the written words countless times.
I placed the letter in the receptacle in front of me and let go of the drawer. The counter lever mechanism literally snatched the letter away from me to allow it to fall amongst of the other billets within its metal body.
There was no going back. The letter no longer belonged to me. It was at the beginning of its long journey over to you.
I was suddenly gripped by fear at the choice of my words. Had I been too harsh? Was my initial anger warranted, was I going to lose you before even reaching you?
I must have paced a trench in my loft, as I relentlessly walked back and forth  awaiting with anticipation the arrival of the mailman, everyday almost since that day, to see if you would acknowledge my contact.
You did and this morning I received your beautiful letter.  I had barely opened it and I knew I already longed to write to you again.
I might be old fashioned of me, but there is something about holding a handwritten note in your hand, it feels like the most intimate of gifts. The look, the feel and beauty of an envelope and discovering the marks made by a human hand in the form of lettering and writing are simply  wonderful things.
It is a very personal act, a moment of commitment to reveal a bit of yourself and to give a bit of yourself. As you put pen to paper, something unique to each of us is revealed.
I felt your mood with each passing paragraph in your letter. Your writing was imbued with feelings and sensitivity. It was private and beautiful.

    1. How simply devine!!!! If Bette doesn’t want to go to N. Carolina, I volunteer to go in her place. Like everyone else I do love this story and they must meet soon. If I say anything else I will go too long in my comments. Love the story, loved this chapter and can hardly wait for them to meet. Thanks for posting. Fantastic update.

    2. Ok, not surprisingly, your partner in crime KWord said it much better than me, it took me ages to read your new letter too as I too wanted to savour every single word ( though I confess I’ve been looking for another verb than “savour’ not to plagiarize her too much, but I realised that this time French must be slightly richer than English as we have so many words and expressions to express delight besides ” savourer “, such as “déguster”, “se délecter de”, “se régaler”, … BAnyway, this was a delightful chapter and with Tina sking Bette if she’s dating someone ( to put it very unpoetically ) I too am thinking ” now we’re talking “. Hehehe !!! Not that I don’t like the slowburn, au contraire, that’s what I love the most, but now the seduction and flirting can “officially” start as I suspect there is no one in Bette’s life either ;) …

    3. Beautiful!!…Heart pounding..[can’t breath sometimes when i’m reading..sooo Romantic for me..] But?…will they even meet? And if they are ..where?…Paris or N.C.?..

    4. Okayyy… You my friend just took this story up at least 10 notches!!! Great, was looking forward to that, and do not worry, I’m right behind you!! I suppose my job interview on Monday won’t be that well prepared, after all!!… Just kidding, but I’ll make sure to get to work right after that. And be ware partner, COZ NOW WE’RE TALKING!!!! And of course, that was an AMAZING chapter! Took me ages to read it, as I wanted to make sure I savoured every word! :D xxKw

    5. guys i kust wanted to say this is amazing what u are doing ,i love this.. how u respond to each other..its great and u both are vary talented writers..cant wait for more .

    6. I couldn’t catch my breath Tina assumes Bette will visit but why would she not in some sense. Their meeting is inevitable no? cant wait for more I best get busy preparing myself for my post and trip to Cardiff tomorrow. Work beckons now on this sunday afternoon, hope you got my message.

    7. You had me googling again…Sa ku ra. It is interesting that this musical motive that repeats itself in the letters, sounds exactly like the letters: tentative, kind, soothing.

    8. Although I am sat in front of my computer, I feel like I am with the girls…waiting for the postman…standing by the mailbox…anticipating the next letter. Simply fantastic, the pair of you!
