How you so well described the exact feeling that is mine right now, the joy that I felt at receiving your letter and the trepidation at the thought of discovering its content.
Although you did not want me to react to your father’s word, I feel that perhaps your father’s negativity towards your choice was more to do with the fact that it did not fit the mould, he had intended for you to fill.
It is undeniable that your father loved you even though his awkwardness turned his love into a materialistic demonstration rather than the emotional support which you required. I am sorry to hear of his passing but something tells me you have not grieved for him yet.
Bette, would it help you if I told you that at this point in your letter, I felt like running towards you to hold you in my arms and maybe just maybe you may let the powerful woman I suspect in you, succumb to what is only human after all and let go for a little while in the confine of my embrace.
I will promise to shelter you from the prying eyes of the world. It would remain our secret, never to be told.
And then, I would take you away to North Carolina and you would meet Magenta.
I laughed when you likened her to my first love. I do…I love her to bits and she certainly loves me back, never begrudging the long absences between our meetings……but Bette, I will confess this to you, I have never truly had a first love and I still await her arrival into my life with baited breath.
I could teach you to ride…..western saddle…. I could ride with you if you worry about doing it alone. Magenta is docile enough to allow two riders on her back for a short while. You’d have nothing to fear. I’d be there right behind you, guiding your movements, helping support you into the correct riding position. All you’d have to do is let her calming influence take you over and surrender to her generous affection.
I have no doubt my parents would also embrace you with their amazing kindness, to show you that the world can be a warm and accepting place.

How simply devine!!!! If Bette doesn’t want to go to N. Carolina, I volunteer to go in her place. Like everyone else I do love this story and they must meet soon. If I say anything else I will go too long in my comments. Love the story, loved this chapter and can hardly wait for them to meet. Thanks for posting. Fantastic update.

Ok, not surprisingly, your partner in crime KWord said it much better than me, it took me ages to read your new letter too as I too wanted to savour every single word ( though I confess I’ve been looking for another verb than “savour’ not to plagiarize her too much, but I realised that this time French must be slightly richer than English as we have so many words and expressions to express delight besides ” savourer “, such as “déguster”, “se délecter de”, “se régaler”, … BAnyway, this was a delightful chapter and with Tina sking Bette if she’s dating someone ( to put it very unpoetically ) I too am thinking ” now we’re talking “. Hehehe !!! Not that I don’t like the slowburn, au contraire, that’s what I love the most, but now the seduction and flirting can “officially” start as I suspect there is no one in Bette’s life either ;) …

I couldn’t catch my breath Tina assumes Bette will visit but why would she not in some sense. Their meeting is inevitable no? cant wait for more I best get busy preparing myself for my post and trip to Cardiff tomorrow. Work beckons now on this sunday afternoon, hope you got my message.

You had me googling again…Sa ku ra. It is interesting that this musical motive that repeats itself in the letters, sounds exactly like the letters: tentative, kind, soothing.
