Angelica’s Fifth Fourth ~ Chapter Seven

Bette followed, trying to explain, “T, it was the undertow.  I didn’t..”

Tina ignored Bette. “Want to make a sandcastle, Angie?”

    “We’re gonna look for crabs.”

Tina again glared at Bette, “Let’s move away from the water for awhile.  You can make a big sandcastle with turrets and a big moat.  Your mommies can help.”

    “Okay.”

Tina did not put the little girl down until they had reached their blanket.  Angelica grabbed her pail and shovel, and pulled her princess book from the tote bag,

“Angie, why are you taking your book?”

“For the picture,” she replied in a voice full of wonder that her mother did not understand the obvious.

Bette grabbed the battered cardboard box and followed Tina and Angelica to a spot on the shoreline where the sand was moist enough for building but where there were no lapping waves.

Angelica looked through her book until she found the page she wanted.  She flattened the tome and placed it on the sand, as she pointed “That one.”

Of course, it was immensely ornate, and Tina sighed.  Bette, in contrast, dumped the content of the cardboard box on to the sand.  Out fell dozens of cups and cans of different shapes and sizes.  Bette packed an empty cranberry sauce can with sand that was moist but not dripping and then turned the cup upside down directly on the sand.  Angelica clapped at the perfectly formed cylinder with the wide bands.

“You can use the cans and cups to make all kinds of shapes for the castle,” Bette explained.

The family labored almost two hours on their sand palace, with three breaks to hunt for crabs and one potty break. When completed, it was a marvel of sand architecture. Angelica wanted to fill the moat, so both mothers accompanied her to the shoreline and hovered protectively as she filled her pail.  When the moat was filled, Tina ran to their blanket for the camera phone.

Several hours later, although her driving responsibilities interfered, Bette made quick glances at Tina and looked into the rear view mirror to see Angelica.  The fright from earlier at the beach had dissipated.  She was happy.

    1. so what was the ethical lapse? You gonna share? Bette have failings? NEVER!It is too funny that Bette is going crazy for junk food, and Tina needs to stop being her mother. I don’t know why Bette is going junk food crazy but if she is enjoying herself, let her be!I have to say that I am disturbed by Tina’s reaction to seeing Angelica fall into the water. Bette was right there, Angie was fine, and tina totally disrespected Bette by grabbing Angie out of her arms, as though only Tina could take proper care of her. That was very hurtful and Bette should not have let that pass. Bette is not the babysitter, she is Angie’s parent, and needs to be treated as such. I also wonder why any child would require a bag of toys, a kid’s ipod and a portable DVD player everytime she left the house?A good storyteller evokes emotions of all kinds and this one is doing that for me! Write on!!!

    2. Caleigh, youngin’s are brought along different these days. We just got in the car and rode, didn’t we? If we beat on our siblings too bad we just heard the omnipotent threat of “If I have to pull this car over”….

    3. “Bette had never been there so she took direction happily” – Is that the character lapse for this chapter? …Do I get a prize? A fruit ice pop? Thanks for the daytrip!
