    Angels Never Came Down 12

Bette rang the doorbell and smiled at Alice who held a bottle of red wine in her hands. She, herself, carried their housewarming present: a portable food processor.

It was almost 9 in the evening and from the sounds from inside the house, it seemed like the party was in full swing. Cars were parked along the street and Bette had had to park two blocks away. Bette hadn’t known that Dana had that many friends. She wondered what else she had neglected to learn about one of her erstwhile closest friends.

It was with a sense of resignation that Bette acknowledged the cause of their estrangement: Alice. She had recognized the symptoms and signs. Before… well, before, she had thought to tweak the always easily-embarrassed Dana about the latter’s crush on their blond friend.

Alice never noticed. Bette knew she should be happy, should be relieved that her lover never found out that one of their closest friends had been in love with her while she herself was in love with Bette. Oh what a tangled web we weave, Bette almost said aloud. Were all lesbian friendships this complicated? In another world, in another life, maybe they weren’t. Too bad Bette couldn’t simply wish herself there.

As the door was opened, Bette had a stray thought that she didn’t want to dwell on: if it came down to her or Dana, who would Alice choose?

"Dana! Oh my God this house is amazing!" Alice chirped and engulfed the woman who opened the door in a hug. Bette saw Dana close her eyes briefly and felt a stab of jealousy. Which was silly as Alice was devoted to her, wasn’t she?

"Thanks for coming, guys. Oh, thanks!" Dana accepted the bottle of wine and motioned for the pair to come in. She had to force herself to not ogle Alice. She was once again reminded, rather painfully, that being with Bette seemed to make Alice glow with joy.

    "Bette."

    "Dana."

The two greeted each other politely. Bette wondered if she should go in for a hug. Dana wondered if she should tell Bette that Tina Kennard was back in town.

    Neither moved.

Alice, oblivious, broke the stand off by asking about where the drinks were. Dana nodded and smiled, then led the way into the kitchen where the makeshift bar had been set up.

    1. Not liking Bette all that much? Well, at least she’s contemplating the whole issue. To be honest, who doesn’t have some prejudices of their own, some so entrenched that they go unquestioned? Personally, I’m just as confused by the femmes as I am by the butches, don’t understand a need to classify oneself as either top or bottom, but hey! first and foremost I support one living their OWN life in their OWN way. But this group has a fair amount of work left it seems.

    2. This is sad but happy at the same time, feel bad for Alice but now its time for B&T get back together and be happy, Alice and Dana can be together too. Glad to catch up with your story and please post more, thanks!

    3. wow…i kinda feel sad and hopefull at the same time…this is really such a web and i hope all the characters will be able to get out of it un-hurt and happy

    4. Noooooooo!!! That’s so mean! Darn it, 7, wrench my heart out. Deep breath. Okay. I’m okay. It’s just, that’s so much heartache right there. Dana, Alice, Bette. Especially Alice and Bette. Stupid Tina! And I’m a TIbetter, so that’s hard for me to say. PPS! And Thank you!

    5. *sigh* Judgemental, “passing”, clingy Bette brought low with one moment of recognition. Alice, poor Alice, who’s done nothing wrong but be hopeful about her relationships within a fractured group. Dana, she’s about to get what she wants, isnt’ she? But maybe not *how* she wanted it. Time will tell. And Tina… she seems happy to take for now. Favors, (and, unknowingly) hearts. She better start giving back. We’ll see how this all turns out. To be honest… I can’t wait. I’ve been waiting patiently for this update, so hopefully the next is soon. Thanks 7! :)

    6. OMG, it finally happened. I just can’t imagine what Bette or Tina is thinking at the moment. Hope Bette stays at the party and maybe taks to Tina when she gets back. Gosh this is just so very complicated, hope everything turns out all right for everyone involved. Thanks for posting. PPS
