Beaten, Working Toward Recovery Chapter 3
As she was combing out her hair she could hear Alice once again thrashing in her sleep, Dana ran into Alice’s room trying to wake her before she caused more pain to her ribs. She could not believe how much resistance Alice was giving her as she was trying to wake her up. It was like she thought Dana was attacking her and she was fighting with what little strength she had. Once Dana was finely able to wake Alice up, the total look of fear in Alice’s eyes was both shocking and telling. It let Dana know how absolutely terrified Alice was because of her nightmares, and she knew at that point the previous night had deeply and maybe forever changed the two of them.

Dana pulled Alice into her arms still trying to calm her down, she didn’t know if she was causing any physical pain but at the moment all she really cared about at the moment was trying to give her emotional comfort.
This was the first time Alice had really shown any type of emotions about her beating, and it was like once she started the dam gates had been opened. She continued to cling onto Dana while sobbing; Dana continued to try to calm Alice down knowing this had to be hurting both her lung and ribs.
About the time Dana had decided Alice was never going to calm down, she felt Alice’s whole body collapse in exhaustion. Alice took a few minutes to regain her regular breathing patterns, before she looked up at Dana. “I don’t know if I can sleep, every time I try to sleep, I keep seeing him over and over. I can’t make my brain turn off. Dana I don’t understand why they wanted to hurt me. I want to sleep so badly, but he keeps coming back in my dreams.”
Dana motioned for Alice to lie back down, then she pulled the blanket down from the other side of the bed and crawled in. “How about I stay in here with you tonight, maybe help you fight off your nightmares.” Alice turned and looked at Dana “My own personal nightmare slayer.” Dana smiled softly at Alice, and then gently placed her arm around Alice’s waist just below the bindings. “Something like that, tomorrow I think I’ll get that other prescription filled and maybe we need to talk to the Doctor about something to help you sleep.”
