    Bette Forgets 37

“As fun as this is,” Bette starts, “I think this would all be more productive if there is talking involved. Maureen?”

Why does it have to be me? I turn to Bette to see her gazing at me. I understand by the look in her eyes. It is from one mother to another. I must go first because I am the mother, Christina is my little girl. I clear my throat.

“Im sorry,” is the first thing that comes out of my mouth

Christina turns to me at hearing this statement.

    “Youre sorry?”

“That can never adequately make up for all of the pain and anguish that we have caused by…turning away from you.”

“But its a start,” Bette says taking Christinas hand, “Isnt it T?”

I have to smile at this endearment that Bette lays at Christinas feet for which she smiles.

“It is a start,” Christina whispers softly and I can see a smile, however small, grace her beautiful face, “It is a start,” she repeats turning her attention to myself and Laurence

I turn to him and I seem him staring at our precious girl unblinking. I nudge him and he turns to me.

    “What?”

    “Blink.”

He grins at this and turns back to Christina and Bette. I watch at Christina stares into Bettes eyes a moment and then turn to us.

“What was it that Bette said to convince you to come?”

Well that was to the point wasnt it? I glance from Bette to Laurence.

“She said a lot of things,” Laurence started, “The one, I think, that offered the most impact was that we werent much different than those hateful men that attacked Bette.”

Christina…Tina raises an eyebrow at this and looks to Bette who shrugged her shoulders.

“She was right, in a way, about that,” Laurence says going on, “Yes we arent criminals but we shared…the same ideals on life. That heterosexual love was the one true form of love and that everything else should be punished. This isnt how we want to be seen. You must believe that.”

    “I do,” says Tina, “Now.”

I couldnt help but flinch at hearing this statement. It was the truth but who ever said truth doesnt hurt?

“I believe that you want to be a part of our lives,” Tina went on, “And for that Im grateful…to Bette for making this possible.”
