Bette’s Two Home Visits
***
Walking around the pristine home, the social worker noted that even though it was partially under renovation the house was immaculately well-kept.
“You haven’t exactly baby-proofed, have you?” Roberta Collier asked knowing full well that it was an unfair question under the circumstances. She expected Bette to make excuses but instead she challenged her.
“Well I don’t believe in babyproofing per se. We’ve certainly taken it into consideration but that doesn’t mean that we need a lot of those ugly rubber things covering everything. I really want Angelica to develop an intrinsic sense of beauty.”
“Well I can tell that’s important to you Bette. Presumably its why I don’t see an abundance of brightly colored stimulating interactive plastic toys strewn around the house.”
“We have workers trampling in and out of here most days. Not exactly a safe environment for an infant to be playing in right now. You do know that Tina and I live in Santa Monica with Angie currently, don’t you? I made note of that in my application.”
“I’m aware of that but since this home is considered your primary residence the assumption is that the child will spend time here will she not?”
“Of course, she will.”
“Then it has to be inspected and meet code. Does she have a separate bedroom? I know many parents like to keep newborns with them in the master, but we do require the child to have their own room.”
“That’s not a problem. It’s one of the reasons for the additions to the house. I’ll show you her room. Right this way.” Bette took the lead.
Angelica’s bedroom suite was previously Bette and Tina’s master bedroom and bath converted into a child’s oasis. The room was reminiscent of the space Melvin had created for Bette when she was nine. The nursery was fitted with every imaginable need a baby could have including a separate play area strewn with stimulating plastic toys.
“Is there anything in this space that doesn’t meet code?” Bette asked knowing that even a critic like Roberta would be hard-pressed to find fault with the set-up.
“No. It’s fine.” Roberta didn’t like being upended, but she couldn’t write anything in the report that wasn’t based on facts and findings.

Hi! Thank you for the chapter!
But i must say that even if i don’t like character Roberta both in the TLW and in your story ironically that the only real obstacle for Bette in TLW on her way for adopting Angelica was only Bette herself when she as trying to go to court and than to kidnap Angelica.

Hey Bat, it took awhile to write this chapter, but wow it was worth the waiting!!!!
I never liked or cared for Roberta and i think you did a excellent job to show her true colors.
And how Bette told her of about what she finds important to show and learn Angie, well done. The same for Tina, so happy to read how she supported Bette and came up for her!!!!
Looks like Helena is loosing it, she gets what she deserves, finally!!!
Looking forward to the next chapter!!!

Another great chapter, I am so glad that Tina told Roberta what was what. People with those types of biases should not be in the social work business. And I think she is lucky it was Melvin and not Peggy that heard the conversation she was having with Bette. Can’t wait for the next chapter. PPS

Hello Bat, thanks for another wonderful chapter. Oh my, that Roberta character was a super bitch on the show and you let her show that continuation, didn’t like her then and even less this time. So happy you let Bette and Tina give her what for as well as Melvin chiming in with his summation of her and that nasty attitude. She doesn’t know this but, if Peggy P had added her two cents worth she might be looking for another job, and it hasn’t been determined that Peggy won’t intervene, she has a long reach and knows all kinds of people. I really liked that Tina gave her a piece of her mind as well without tearing her apart. She is really in the wrong profession with her biases and attitude, God bless those that don’t have as much help as our girls and that have to put up with that woman. There are people like her all over the Social Services environment. Again, thanks for a great chapter. Thanks for posting. Have a great week.
