Can we get it back – Chapter 22

“Yeah.” Bette says, she squeezes Tina’s hand slightly for comfort.

“So I’ll see you again tomorrow at 11:15.” The doctor says. They say their goodbyes and Bette and Tina walks towards the elevators.

“You okay babe?” Tina asks as they walk slowly down the hallway.

“I’m fine. I don’t feel anything yet.” Bette says.

They get down to the car and starts on the drive home.

“I need to go by the store really quick. Are you okay to join? Or shall I drive you home first?” Tina asks.

“I’m okay to join. I want to join as long as I’m able to. And I’ve always enjoyed shopping with you.” Bette replies with a smile.

“Okay, let’s go.” Tina says and maneuver the car towards the store.

One hour later they walk through the doors at home. Tina walked straight into the kitchen and placed the groceries on the counter and put everything away before going back to take off her jacket and shoes. Bette was already seated in the living room. Tina walks over and takes a seat next to her.

“You want to lay down?” Tina asks, reaching her hand up to Bette’s face and softly put a stray hair behind her ear.

“I’m not tired. But I think I would like to read a book or something. I started a book a few months ago, never got to finish it.” Bette replies, she stands up and walk over to a bookshelf and takes out the book and walk back to the couch. She shows the book to Tina.

“Bette?” Tina says softly as she reads the title. “Letting go of the person you used to be? Why that book?” Tina curiously asks.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Bette replies as she opens the book on the page she last stopped at. She takes a deep breath. “I lost you, then I lost Kit. I was starting to lose myself. I lost Angie in a way also for a little while there. I was heartbroken and I was alone. I needed something to hold on to. And I needed so find out what I did or did not do. What was my part in your departure? Someone recommended this to me, so I bought it. Searching for answers. But then after I got the book, it was placed in the bookshelf. I moved back to L.A. Angie came back. The question to run for mayor came up. I was too busy. But finally, I was able to start reading it. I still felt a deep grief about you and Kit. Got halfway through before the campaign took up too much of my time.” Bette says as she looks sideways at Tina and quickly looked away.
