“Bette, hi, this is a surprise.” Tina says. Bette can hear voices in the background.
“Hi, are you free to talk for a few minutes?” Bette asks hurriedly.
“Eh, sure, just let me go into another room.” Tina says. Bette hear Tina cover up the phone and tell, what is probably Carrie that she’ll be right back. Few seconds later, the voices in the background is gone and Tina is back on. “There, I’m all ears.” Tina says. “What’s up?” She asks.
“Well, I know Angie has talked to you about me about a month ago.” Bette starts and is not quite sure how to continue.
“Yeah, she called me, why?” Tina asks.
“Well, the truth is that she was right in that I have been holding something back from her.” Bette starts. “I…” Bette tries to continue, but her voice fails her.
“Bette? What is going on?” Tina asks now getting worried.
“I didn’t want to tell you or bother you with this Tina, but I’m at the hospital now and tomorrow I’m having an operation and when I got here tonight I seem to have forgotten to change my power of attorney. So you are still listed as mine. And I didn’t want you to get a call without knowing first.” Bette says fast, scared of Tina’s reaction.
“What do you mean, hospital?” Tina asks, now confirmed worried. She can hear Bette starting to cry.
“I… They’ve found a tumor in my head and tomorrow they are trying to take it out.” Bette quickly gets out.
“Oh my God, Bette…” Tina says as she feels tears forming in her eyes.
“Tina, I don’t need your pity. I didn’t even want you to know, but… since I forgot to change POA, then you should know.” Bette says.
“Why didn’t you want me to know? I still care for you Bette, we share a daughter. I should know, because this will affect her also.” Tina says, getting a little angry.
“I know Tina, but the truth is, that having you here will be too hard for me. I need to concentrate on getting better. You know I’m still in love with you Tina and it pains me to the core that I couldn’t make you happy anymore. Having you here will kill me.” Bette says without thinking about her word of choice. “So please don’t come here. Angie will stay with Shane and Alice will also help.” Bette adds. “If we need to rearrange something later, like Angie moving to you for a while, then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.” Bette adds.
