Bette of course had expected this wonderful and amazing woman to have someone special in her life, but to see it with her own eyes was an entire different matter. She couldn’t get the images out of her head, they haunted her night and day. She couldn’t talk to Emily about it for all the obvious reasons and really, there wasn’t much to say.
It was another empty day – she didn’t even know if it were a Saturday or a Sunday, only that it was weekend since she didn’t have to go to school. The holidays were nearing, which meant two months of not seeing ms K, and then her last year with ms K.
If she could, she’d have skipped all History classes, but there was too much pressure from her father to be the best in every subject and it interested her after all. But it was hard, hard to watch her, to hear her voice, to feel her near. It was hard when their eyes met and Bette would look away every time it happened. She would never linger after classes, but be sure to get out as soon as possible. She wouldn’t talk to her anymore, or ms Peabody. She wouldn’t talk to anyone. There was nothing to say.
She was lying on her bed and couldn’t even cry, as if she had used all the tears that her body was capable of producing. She went from day to day, carrying herself around, not really knowing what she was doing, thinking nothing. Nothing but that simple phrase: She has a boyfriend.
She hadn’t smiled since that day, that day she saw them. She hadn’t smiled or felt any emotion in the near distance of happiness. Everything that would make her happy any other time was now overshadowed by her grief, her heart ached literally, as if it had been ripped from her chest and cruelly enough been put back in, only to rip it out over and over again.
She wasn’t lying alone, this time. She was in the arms of the person that was supposed to make her happy beyond belief, Emily. She lay cuddled up to her girlfriend, resting her head on her shoulder, her arm thrown over her stomach, her leg thrown over hers. Emily was softly stroking the brown curls, playing with them every now and then. They lay silent for what seemed like hours, days, years.
