“Do you want to tell me what’s wrong?” Emily finally asked.

Bette kept silent. She hadn’t told Emily about what she found out – it would be insensitive. It would also be a proof she was still not over ms K, and she desperately wanted Emily to believe she was.

This made feel Bette even worse. The guilt about her feelings for ms Kennard were so overwhelming and it became almost too hard to bear when she was in Emily’s arms.

“I love you,” Bette finally whispered. She knew it was what Emily wanted to hear, what she was meant to say. The words were not a lie, it was more about the person she spoke them to.

Emily turned her face to look deep into Bette’s brown orbs. She let her hand trace Bette’s jawline and seemed to search something in her eyes.

“You’ve been acting so strange, lately.” Her voice was soft, as if it were a crime to speak loudly, to speak in a normal voice, even.

    “I haven’t. You’re imagining things, I’m perfectly alright.”

    “I don’t believe you.”

Bette looked away. “Fine, then don’t. I don’t get the point in this.” She wanted to sit up, but Emily stopped her. She continued, in a very calm way, not upset at all.

“No. Don’t do it again, don’t play that trick on me anymore. You have to stop running away as soon as you can’t handle something, you have to stop beating yourself up over every mistake you make and retreat afterwards. People care for you, are worried about you. You need to accept that.”

“You have no fucking idea how many times I don’t run.”

“Not literally. Whenever something upsets you, you just… go away, mentally. You don’t say anything and yet you have this look in your eyes that breaks my heart, because I love you. I don’t want to see you in that kind of pain. And it also breaks my heart to know I can’t help you, to know that no one can but you; and you won’t see it. I just want you to be happy.”

    “I am happy.”

Emily let out a hollow laugh. “Don’t take me for a fool, Bette, I know you better than you think I do. I know your heart’s not truly with me, I know you still want her. I try to forget it, I try to ignore it but I can’t, not when you’re like this.”
