    Chapter 1

“He told me that you threatened him if he lets anything happen to me so I feel very safe in his care.”

“He’s a good man Bette. He loves you dearly. He seems to be handing your departure from the gallery well.”

“We’ve got a very capable gallery manager and staff in place. He’s been working with several of my exclusive clients for months now; they love him. He’s got a great eye for new talent and his skill as a curator is unmatched. We’ve got several emerging artists already under agreement for upcoming shows. He’s thrilled at the opportunity to take on more responsibility and of course he would do anything to support me. I have every confidence in him to take over the business but of course I miss working with him on a day to day basis.”

“You do still plan to keep your tradition of Sunday Brunch at the Planet don’t you. Won’t you see him then?”

“Absolutely, and we’ll make time for each other no matter what. He’s really more of a little brother than a business partner and he does take that role of protector very seriously. He’s helping me to screen potential candidates that are interviewing to be my executive assistant but I think he’s doing that more for their sake than mine.” Bette joked referring to her temperament.

“I’m sure he is. I’ve seen you in action. You have been known to intimidate a few people to where you’ve had them quacking in their boots.”

“This from the queen of intimidation? I’ve learned it all from you.”

    “Touché my dear.”

They both laugh at how demanding they can be of others and what little tolerance they have for incompetence. The more thought she gave it the more Bette liked the idea of hiring Peggy’s personal assistant to be her own at least for the next two years.

“You know Peggy; if you’re serious about me hiring Michael and if he’s willing to relocate to California for the next two years I would love to have him. He’s familiar with the demands that this type of job would entail and he has knowledge of art, fund-raising etc. He’s actually perfect.”

“I’m sure he would love the change of scenery. Besides he won’t have much to do in New York with me gone. Helena didn’t want him to be her assistant. She thinks I suggested it so he could spy on her. She’s so paranoid but I think that comes from guilt. She must have something to hide if she thinks I would ask him to spy. Anyway, I’ll give him a call and let him know that he has my blessings if he wants to do it. I’ll take care of all his living expenses. He can keep his place in New York and stay at one of my condo properties here.”

“That will make it very attractive for him, and I’ll feel closer to you having him here. God what am I going to do without you for two long years Peggy?”

“Don’t worry. You’re going to be just fine.”

“I know. Take care of yourself and come back to us safely. Hopefully you will have a new grandson or granddaughter waiting to meet you when you get back. In two years we might even have a second one on the way if I get pregnant.”

“I’m counting on it.” Peggy got up to leave, and Bette stood as well linking arms as they walked out of her office.

“You should let us plan a farewell dinner at the Planet for you Peggy. I’m sure Tina and everyone will want to wish you a bon voyage.”

“That sounds wonderful. Just let me know the date and time and I’ll be there. I don’t leave L.A. for two weeks so check my schedule with Michael when you talk to him.”

“I’ll do that and then make arrangements with Marina.”

“Perfect. Now I really need to get going so you can get back to work. I’ll see you soon darling.”

Bette and Peggy hug each other tightly and kiss on the cheek. They are both close to tears as the embrace lingers, neither wanting to let go just yet.

    “Bye Peggy. I love you.”

    “Love you too sweetheart.”

How nice to have you back again after many weeks, I’ve read many of your stories and I like them very much. This one has a great beginning, I really enjoyed reading it, and even though, we could foresee a conflictive development with Kelly, Jody and Helena, which by the way makes the story more interesting, I will wait eagerly for the update, pps.
      Thanks
