Chapter 1 – Bette and Melvin
“So, why are you still working there?” Melvin asked seeing as though they were heading to the CAC.
“I’m still doing my job Daddy. You didn’t raise me to quit remember. No matter how miserable she makes my life, I won’t stoop to her level. I won’t cause any trouble, but I’m certainly not going to give them the opportunity to stab me in the back.”
“And what about this Allyn Barnes. Does she have anything to do with the CAC?”
“No, she just wanted to see the Dosso Dossi painting so we arranged to meet at my office before lunch. I’m really excited about this meeting with Allyn. I’m trying to convince her to show her work, which hasn’t been available to the public for over 20 years.”
“So, that will be your last hoorah for the CAC?” Melvin asked. Pleased at his daughter’s strong work ethic.
“No, actually. I want her for my gallery. I’d like to do a side by side retrospective with my mother’s work. Allyn is not interested in selling her art either so they can both be on permanent exhibit. It’s what we’re going to discuss at lunch.”
“I’m still skeptical about this gallery thing Elizabeth. I’m sure there are dozens of other museums that would hire you.”
“Trust me Daddy, I know what I’m doing.” Her exasperation was breaking through her attempt to have a civil conversation with her father.
“OK, fine. I’m just giving you my opinion. I only want what’s best for you Elizabeth.”
Bette almost left it there, but she was so annoyed with her father countering her decisions that old feelings started bubbling up. “You know Daddy, I don’t think we’ll ever agree on what you think is best for me. You’ve opposed every major life changing decision that I’ve ever made.”
“How can you say that Elizabeth. I’ve supported every endeavor you’ve ever undertaken. I’ve given you every opportunity to follow your every dream.”
“Not always Daddy. Not with your blessings. I know you love me Daddy. I know you want what you think is best, but you haven’t always made it easy for me; especially not when it mattered most.”
Bette didn’t need to elaborate as they both knew what she was referring to. Her father’s grunt made it clear that he didn’t want to hear any more. Talking about Bette’s career choices was one thing but when it came to her personal lifestyle choices it was a taboo subject that they avoided to keep the peace.
Father and daughter spent the rest of the ride in silence; each deep in thought. While Bette contemplated her future, Melvin looked back on his past regrets of which there were many. Contrary to his behavior the last thing he wanted to do was alienate his younger daughter. If anything, he needed to be close to her now more than ever.

The Porter family and the absent Maxine has been the most interesting TLW storyline for me. I am really looking forward your story because you will do a wonderful job with them.
