Chapter 10
Bette was back in full swing working with Michael on the next big coup for the art center; the Allyn Barnes Retrospective would debut at the CAC the following spring. Bette considered Allyn Barnes to be the most important living artist of our time. She’d been reclusive for years, but when Bette was at Yale she managed to penetrate her anonymity. Allyn Barnes only agreed to the exhibit at the CAC because she was impressed with Bette’s knowledge of her work and her tenacity. Other than Bette’s mother Maxine Wolff Porter, Allyn Barnes had had the greatest influence on Bette’s decision to pursue a career in art.
Next on Bette’s agenda was a meeting with Leo Herrera to go over budgets and fund raising campaigns to support her visions. The revenues realized from the Provocations exhibit paid off all the outstanding debt and even showed a healthy profit. The board was very pleased that Bette had already achieved the most important tenet of the recovery plan for the CAC. In a little over a year since she took over they were operating in the black. Bette implored Leo to keep focus on this objective as they worked together to become more strategic in managing the operation at the CAC.
Leo’s exceptional fund-raising ability was what got him the job as the new Director and so far he’d proven himself beyond expectations. Bette didn’t anticipate that the economy would improve in the near term but they were better positioned now than they were a year ago to get through the economic crisis.
“Leo you have done a tremendous job with the budgets. We’re right on target with the fund-raising campaigns. Well done.”
“Thank you Bette. I’ll have all the grant proposals ready for your review by next week.”
“Does that include the Peabody Arts Foundation?”
“Yes. I’m planning to make a personal visit to Helena Peabody to present it.”
“Leo, would you mind if I presented that one? I’ll be in upstate New York to meet with Allyn Barnes in a couple of weeks. I’d like to tag on a few days in the city. This will be a good chance to finally meet Peggy’s daughter.”
“That’s fine by me. She has a bit of a reputation of being a dragon; likes to fuck with people for sport.”

Thanks so much for this chapter Bat; I see here that Bette is still like ‘I have nothing to do with Tina’s problems’. She is a little worry for knowing nothing from her ex, but that’s all. They were together for 7 years, and Bette doesn’t acknowledge any responsibility in their break out (personally I think Bette is in denial), as if everything was just Tina’s doing. I like the possibility of Bette dating a psychologist (she needs help in that department). It’s curious now that I see after ten chapters, on one side Tina feels very guilty, suffocated and alone and in the other side Bette feels the opposite than Tina, a victim, ready to let go and wrapped and protected by her friends. I don’t want to take sides with any of them but I feel a little unfairness in this relationship I don’t know if it is the cause or consequence of their dysfunction or if it is just part of it. Thank you again, I like so much you story, it makes me think on their situation; and I’m very captivated to know where you are taking us, I’m wanting eagerly for your next update.
Hello there BAT,been a long time, glad to see you posting again.Synopsis of what i understand so far,TINA/BETTE are having problems and broke up(not good)TINA then decides not to go the toy route but the real mccoy(so not good)Then she decides to date HENRY(major turn-off)and engages in hide the banana(i’m feeling squeemish)with this guy but pines for BETTE(therapyanyone?)BETTE is still hoping and not hoping to reconsile with her wife(ahemm),so now we have total dysfunction. Can TINA get her self together or will BETTE continue towards moving on?Talking is a little late for BETTE if she wants TINA to listen to what she has to say even if TINA does talk the shame alone of what she has done will drive her further away i think, but your story and like everyone else i too will wait. BE SAFE and hurry back.THANKS,
