Tina shrugs and gives a small laugh.
(Tina) I don’t know
Bette smiles at her.
The waitress stops past the table and refills their water glasses and they both pause to acknowledge her. They then look back at one another.
(Bette) Is Helena the friend you travelled with? That you met studying in the UK and subjected to these shambolic trips?
Tina looks at her for a moment and smiles.
(Bette) So some things you told me were true then? Was that you slipping up?
(Tina smiles) Yes, that was me slipping up
Bette smiles at her.
They both pause for a sip of wine.
(Bette) And is that also how you travel with Andrew?
Tina looks at her.
(Tina) No, not with Andrew. Well once, but that was enough, it’s not for him
(Bette) How long have you been together?
Tina takes a deep breath and looks back at her.
(Tina) Many years. We met when we were undergrads and have been together ever since
They sit awkwardly and both have a sip of wine.
Bette eventually breaks the silence.
(Bette) Well, I’m looking forward to teasing Helena when I next see her about her time spent in a Nepalese prison
Bette smiles at her and Tina laughs and raises her index finger.
(Tina) Ah, can’t do that without giving the game away
They smile at each other. Bette has another sip of her drink and Tina watches her.
(Tina) You know, you’re handling all of this better than I thought you would
Bette meets her eyes and considers this.
(Bette) How did you think I would handle it?
(Tina) I thought you’d be angrier
Bette looks down towards her drink, and Tina watches her closely.
(Bette) I am angry
She raises her eyes to meet Tina’s.
(Bette) And hurt
Bette looks at her intently as Tina takes a breath and looks back at her.
(Bette) But the emotion that seems to be winning out is happiness to see you again
Tina takes a sharp intake of breath as she takes in Bette’s words, and they stare at each other for a long while.
Bette eventually looks down at her watch.
(Bette) Anyway, I think we better call it a night. I have an early start in the morning
