    Chapter 12

Tina is thrown by Bette’s matter of fact tone and not having used her key, and so resists the urge to kiss her. She turns to walk towards the kitchen and Bette reaches out for her.

    (Bette) Tee, wait.

Tina turns back towards her and they look at each other for a moment.

(Bette) I said I needed to clear my head and I’ve done that. I overreacted about your dinner, I know that

Tina studies her for a moment.

(Tina) OK. Sorry I just don’t really know what to think here. I haven’t heard from you for days, and now you’re back to knocking

(Bette) I’m sorry, I didn’t want to barge in having behaved the way I did

Tina looks at her and sighs.

(Tina) I know this is confusing, I get confused too. And it’s fine to need time. It’s been a shitty few days for me though, not knowing what you’re thinking or where we stand

Bette steps towards her and places her hands on Tina’s hips.

    (Bette) I’m sorry

Tina runs her hands through Bette’s hair and smiles faintly at her.

    (Tina) It’s ok. I’m glad you’re here.

They make their way into the kitchen and Tina continues making breakfast at the stove, while Bette prepares their coffees.

(Bette) So, how was your dinner anyway? Should I expect to see an Abby Richards column in an upcoming edition?

Tina looks over at her briefly before concentrating back on the stove and answering casually.

(Tina) The dinner didn’t end up happening

Bette stops what she is doing and looks over at her. After a moment of silence Tina eventually looks back at her and sighs.

(Tina) I didn’t cancel it because you wanted me to, if that’s what you’re wondering

Bette continues looking at her and Tina sighs again, returning her focus to the stove.

(Tina) It was represented to me as a work dinner but it became clear it was not that for her, so I cancelled. It was never anything other than a professional catch up for me, and I didn’t want to mislead her.

Bette looks at her for another moment, deciding whether to pursue the issue further.

They both move around the kitchen, Tina preparing breakfast and Bette returning to  organising their coffees. Bette places a coffee on the bench near Tina and then stands back, sipping from her own mug.

(Bette) Are you seeing anyone else? Out of interest

Tina looks up at her in surprise, and frowns.

    (Tina) Out of interest?

They both hold the other’s gaze.

(Tina) Are we drifting into dangerous territory here again?

(Bette) I’m not asking you not to, I would just like to know if you are

Tina looks at her for a long moment, considering her response.

(Tina) I’m not seeing anyone else

    (Bette) OK

They stand looking at each other in silence, before Tina frowns at her.

(Tina) And do I get to know if you are?

Bette smirks and takes a step back, leaning against the bench and taking a sip of her coffee.

(Bette) I wasn’t sure if you’d be interested

Tina steps towards her and places a hand either side of her on the bench top. She gives her a stern look and Bette smiles faintly back at her.

(Bette) I’m not seeing anyone else. And I have no intention of seeing anyone else.

    (Tina) Bette

(Bette) I know we’re not asking that of one another, I just thought you might like to know that too

Tina looks at her intently, before her cell rings and interrupts the moment. She steps back and moves towards her handbag on the couch, glancing over her shoulder at Bette as she exits the kitchen.

(Tina) I have no intention of seeing anyone else either

Bette smiles and takes another sip of her coffee.

    1. They’re both in too deep now to stop this casual-in-name-only affair. I understand why Bette is not telling Tina about the congresswoman’s warning but I hope she’ll find the courage to share that information with her soon. I’m pretty sure the congresswoman is not the only one who has started to notice something going on between them. If and when this affair comes out, it’s Tina’s career and credibility that will probably be hit the hardest so I hope Bette will come clean soon. I don’t know how they’ll survive the shit storm once this becomes public but I’m still rooting for them and hoping their deep love for one another will see them through whatever test or scandal comes their way. Thanks a lot for this chapter and well-written story, katynd! :) Can’t wait to read the next one!

    2. So Bette is not telling Tina about the Senator’s knowledge of their affair because she is afraid she will lose Tina. She is also afraid that Tina is not committed to this relationship and is seeing or interested in someone else. I believe that Bette and Tina are in a “no where” land. They are neither together nor apart. Their desire to become closer and advance the relationship is deeply desired by both, yet they cannot do that and abide by the rules of the relationship. And I am seeing that the rules are not allowing them to talk to one another about what matters – how they feel about each other. The Senator who knows, is Bette’s political boss. And in order to get Bette to do the things she wants done that Bette might be resistant to, this Senator now has leverage to make Bette bend to her wishes. And this leverage is powerful. With the release of this information may look bad for Bette and it could cause Tina problems in her job with the New York Times. And it will definitively cause trouble in Bette’s relationship with Tina. And why wouldn’t it. Tina deserves to know. And you know there is a path to resolution… change the rules for the relationship…. commit to each other for the long haul and try to make a life together…..go public with it and let the chips fall where they may. They have a real chance for true happiness. They are now both into the 2nd half of their lives…. time to make some decisions as to what their true priorities in life really are. If they want to be with each other in a truly intimate, satisfying relationship, then something has to change… and it won’t happen when they are keeping secrets from each other.

      Thanks for the chapter….
