    Chapter 14

    Bette smiles at her.

    (Tina) I’m sick of all of the secrecy we’ve been subjecting ourselves to. Let’s face this. Admit the conflict existed and move on

    (Bette) Tee I appreciate what you’re trying to do here, but I still think it’s too great a risk for you

    (Tina) Bette I know I’ve played a role in your decision to resign. Perhaps a bigger role than you’re admitting

    They look at one another.

    (Tina) Let me do this for us. I think it’s about time I took a career risk for our relationship

    They look at each other for a moment before both smiling faintly. Bette reaches out for Tina’s hand.

    (Bette) OK then, a joint statement. I’ll have my people draft it and send it to you for your input

    Tina smiles at her.

    (Tina) Great

    (Bette) Any more questions?

    (Tina smiles) Nope

    Bette smiles broadly.

    (Bette) Well then

    Bette pulls Tina towards her and Tina stands and moves onto Bette’s lap. They both can’t keep the smiles off their faces through their deep and very meaningful kiss. They eventually pull back and lean their foreheads together, both with tears in their eyes, as they speak in hushed voices to each other.

    (Bette) So, the rules are off?

    (Tina smiles) Rules are off. Boundaries probably remain until you resign

    Bette nods.

    (Bette) So now I can tell you that I’m crazy about you?

    (Tina smiles) Yes

    (Bette) And that I’m as hopelessly in love with you as I ever was?

    Tina smiles and runs her fingers through Bette’s hair.

    (Tina) Yes

    Bette leans in and kisses her gently again.

    (Tina) And I can tell you that I feel the same. I’ve been dying to tell you

    Bette smiles at her.

    (Tina) I’m so in love with you baby. And I want this to be it now for us. We’re so good together

    Bette smiles back at her.

    (Bette) We are

    They both lean in and Tina wraps her arms around Bette, with Bette burying her face into Tina’s neck. They hold onto each other tightly, and remain in that position for a long while.

     

    The next morning, Tina and Bette lie in bed together. Tina has woken first and has been captivated by watching her partner sleep, reflecting on everything that has had to fall into place for them to have landed back in this happy place together again. Bette stirs and opens her eyes to her partner’s love-filled gaze and laughs.

    (Bette) I do like it when you look at me like that

    (Tina) Well get used to it

    They look into each other’s eyes for a while longer, both smiling faintly and Tina running her finger along Bette’s jawline.

    (Tina) Tell me, when did you know that you wanted to try again? Like long-term, commitment kind of try again

    (Bette) The moment the radio producer in DC told me I’d be seeing you

    (Tina) Really?

    (Bette) I’ve known for a long time that I’d jump at another chance with you. The real question is when I knew I stood a chance

    (Tina) And when was that?

    (Bette) Well I was hopeful after our first chat in your office. It went better than I thought, and you even laughed once.

    They share a smile.

    (Bette) But I knew during the actual interview

    (Tina) You’re going to say that it was when I was looking at you while you were discussing the complexities of neoliberalism and healthcare reform

    Bette looks at her, surprised.

    (Bette) Well, yes. You looked at me like you were still in love with me

    (Tina) That’s because I had just realised that I was still in love with you

    Bette laughs and her eyes glisten.

    They both smile at each other and lean in, bringing their lips together. Bette rolls over and pulls Tina on top of her and they get lost in the moment, happily starting their day and the rest of their lives together.

    1. YAY! :D I’m in cloud 9 that they found a way to stay together and finally commit to a long-term relationship! I had a feeling Bette will not sacrifice her love for Tina again and that she’s not cut out to be a scheming politician. I’m sure she’ll land a good job in New York. And I’m glad Tina’s willing to risk her career and reputation too for her love of Bette but I hope she’ll get to keep her job. This is such a lovely, sweet, happy ending for our fave couple, katynd, and I can’t thank you enough for it!❤ :D A thousand times thank you for this lovely, unique, well-written story, katynd, and I’m so looking forward to the epilogue! ❤ :D

    2. An invasion of Wasps meant I was awake at 3.30 am here in the UK and that, after dealing with it , I could not resist checking my emails. Hence the reason I had the delight of being notified of your post and the pleasure of reading the Final Chapter. Thank you I enjoyed the conclusion and am happy to see an Epilogue is to come.

      Pleasantly surprised with the maturity of our ladies to come to the conclusion that they BOTH would need to put the ‘ship ahead of careers THIS time.

      You did a fab job of showing how well suited they truly are for one another. U win the Oscar!!!

    7. Great story by a wonderful writer. I wasn’t sure how this would end but you did it with style. The girls reunite, no blood shed and hopefully no regrets. Please continue with this storyline…Tina a journalist and Bette, the lawyer could be a great niche for wonderful stories. Thanks again, I look forward to reading more stories by you.

    8. Nice concluding chapter. But I was worried with Tina’s reaction to seeing Bette show up in her office. If she won’t respond to her text and emails, what can she expect? Well written and a joyful conclusion. And in this day and time I think that Tina is overly concerned about her position as political editor of the paper. As the editor, it is her position to decide what runs in the paper and what doesn’t. Unless she have vetoed some article or piece of information about Bette Porter, her management will not have a problem. All journalist have information which do not end up in their publications. It’s always a matter of judgement as to what is in the public interest and what isn’t. And that which is in the public interest, there has to be confirmation that it is a fact and not just a rumor or gossip. In Bette and Tina’s case, it is a matter or appearances not what the reality is that forms the conflict of interest. They have made a good decision. They have made the decision of what is best for each of them individually and as a couple. I believe that Tina’s joining in Bette and making a joint announcement of their relationship will be best for Tina’s career. Being a secret is what would eventually have the greatest impact on her career and eventually on her relationship. Particularly for a Political Editor. Well done Tina…

    9. What a perfect, beautiful happy ending to an exceptional story! My favorite lines -“(Bette) And that I’m as hopelessly in love with you as I ever was?” and “(Tina) I’m so in love with you baby.”

      And this line is perfect – “happily starting their day and the rest of their lives together.”

      Such a well-written story, I like your writing style. I enjoyed every chapter. Thank you for such a GREAT story
