Chapter 17
(Shane) This might be hard to hear, but just hear me out
Bette looks over at her.
(Shane) What is it you are offering her exactly?
(Bette) What do you mean?
(Shane) Well, does she even want to live in LA? She only moved here for his career didn’t she?
Bette looks down towards her drink as Shane continues.
(Shane) You’re saying she needs somebody who would let her live her life for once, to follow her instead of trying to fit her into their life. Is that you, do you think?
Bette takes a moment before responding.
(Bette) You’re saying you think she should choose neither of us?
Shane has a sip of beer and thinks for a moment.
(Shane) I want her to choose you Bette. I think there’s a good chance that she loves you, and doesn’t love him. It just sounds like there’s a bit going on for her other than just choosing between the two of you
Bette looks at her.
(Shane) You said she spoke about you showing her who she’s supposed to be. I guess if you want to be with her, and have it work, it might be an idea to let her be that person?
Bette has another sip of her beer and looks out over the pool, deep in thought.
A few days later, Bette Porter gallery. Bette is busily working at her desk in her office and James knocks lightly on the door frame.
James cringes in apology as Bette looks up at him with a look of annoyance at the interruption.
(James) Andrew Rhys-Baker is here to see you
Bette raises her eyebrows and looks at him for a long moment.
(James) Shall I show him in?
Bette takes another moment and clears her throat before she responds, thrown by the unexpected visitor.
(Bette) Ah, yes. Thank you James, show him in
Bette sits at her desk and listens as James walks down the hallway and returns with Andrew. James waves him in and Andrew enters as Bette rises from her chair. They shake hands before both taking a seat on opposite sides of the desk.
(Andrew) Thank you for seeing me, I won’t keep you long
(Bette) It’s no problem, I’ll admit I’m a bit surprised though
(Andrew) I just wanted to stop by and clear the air really. I know we haven’t been in contact since you dissolved our partnership, and I wanted to assure you there’s no ill feeling on my side, and I hope not on yours also
(Bette) No, of course not. That’s very generous of you Andrew, I know I caught you unaware
(Andrew smiles) You certainly did, but I know these things don’t always go as planned. Anyway, make sure you have us on the invite list for your next opening, we’d love to come
(Bette) Yes, of course. You’ll receive an invitation. We have a show opening next week
(Andrew) Ah, we’ll have to miss that one unfortunately
He smiles broadly.
(Andrew) Tina and I finally set a date
Bette stops still for a moment before recovering and smiling weakly back at him.
(Bette) Congratulations
(Andrew smiles) Thank you. She’s been reluctant to have a large society wedding for a long time now and I’ve eventually come around to the idea of eloping. I love an event so it’s a shame to miss out, but if I have her that’s all that really matters
Bette takes a sharp breath and forces a smile.
(Bette) Yes
(Andrew) Do you know yet the event following that?
(Bette) Ah, yes, it will be a couple of weeks following
(Andrew) Well, we’ll be there. Thanks Bette, I won’t keep you, I’ll leave you to your day
(Bette) Thanks
They both stand and shake hands and Andrew leaves. Bette stands by her desk, breathing heavily and trying to compose herself.

My heart just stopped.
Mine too!!
Shane is right. Tina should choose herself first and be alone for a little while, before choosing to be with someone else.
Well, dear Tina… if Andrew is your choice, you need to communicate that directly to Bette…. and soon. If it’s not well, what exactly are your plans?
This is really a huge cliff hanger for me…. yes, my heart just jumped into my throat too.
Post soon… I need to calm down… Thank you for posting.
Gut punch for a Monday morning. Eagerly awaiting more T.
Monday’s are always tough.
Great story. Please continue.
Wow, this is not what I expected! Let me set the stage…I live at a beach on the east coast. We were not hit with Ian directly but the tropical storm Ian gave us heavy rain and gusting winds. Last night around 7 the wind snapped a large tree that crashed into the 6’ fence then came down on the house. Scared me and the dog. Tree did not break the 2 windows but was leaning on them. All night the limbs scraped the windows in the wind gusts. I slept, just not well. This morning I took dog out in rain, wind, and cold. Came in, took shower to warm up, fixed a cup of tea and sat in my chair waiting for tree guy. I opened my IPad and find the next chapter in your great story!! I thought I would lose myself in the chapter. Not happening today! My tale of woe continues. I am in a really deep funk! Please post soon….I can’t live here for long there is a nor’easter heading from Virginia to Maine! I just can’t………
I do agree that maybe Tina needs to break the engagement and return to east coast. She really can’t or shouldn’t leave one relationship with an alpha and jump into another one until she finds her voice, her gifts and her freedom. Then over a period of time she and Bette can meet again as equals.
I so hate Cliff Hangers!
Love this Story though, please post again soon.

Wow. You packed a lot in three pages. I won’t comment on Tina continuing the charade. I liked that level-headed Shane had the talk with Bette. However, Andrew is the character I am really interested in now. I’ll keep my speculations to myself because my imagination is taking me to all sorts of places, but I am so looking forward to you revealing his true motivations behind wanting to suddenly elope and then making sure Bette knows about it. There might be nothing to it, and we can take him at face value OR who’s to say: only you katynd. :-) Thanks for another great chapter and for keeping me coming back for more.
Because there is so much at stake for Andrew, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had Tina followed and found out about Bette. You know what they say , keep your family close, and your enemies closer. Eloping would guarantee Andrew gets Tina. Let’s wait and see.
This one chapter says a lot. I agree with Shane. But, I also think Tina is being very selfish right now.
