Chapter 17
Bette smiles and has a sip of her water.
(Bette) Yes, that’s what I’m saying
Alice nods and has a sip of her beer.
(Dana) Do you think it’ll ever change for her? That over time she’ll be comfortable with more?
(Bette) No, I don’t. And I certainly have no expectation of it changing for her. My expectation is that we’ll continue doing this
Bette shrugs and they all look at her for a moment.
(Dana) Forever?
(Bette smiles) Indefinitely
Dana nods uncertainly.
(Alice) And you’re OK with this?
(Bette) I’m better than just ok with this, I want this
Bette glances around the table.
(Bette) I think that’s the thing you’re missing here. I like this arrangement. It works for me
Alice continues looking at her uncertainly.
(Bette) Alice, would you stop looking at me like that?
(Alice sighs) Sorry, I just don’t really know what to make of this
(Bette) I didn’t really expect such a conservative reaction from you
Alice frowns.
(Alice) Conservative?
She glances around the table and then back to Bette.
(Alice) You think I’m being conservative?
Bette shrugs and nods, and Shane and Dana cringe as they wait for Alice’s reaction.
(Alice) That is by far the worst thing you’ve ever said to me
Bette smiles and shakes her head.
(Bette) Why does this even bother you?
(Alice) Because you’re my friend and I’m worried about you
(Bette) And I’m telling you that you don’t need to be. I’m fine. More than fine actually. I’m so happy, and so in love, and everything about this feels right to me. Feels the most right anything has ever felt to me
(Alice sighs) I guess you’ve just never mentioned this before. That this sort of arrangement appeals to you. You don’t think you’re changing yourself too much for her?
(Bette smiles) I didn’t know it was what I wanted until I experienced it
Bette pauses for a sip of her drink. She then looks back to Alice.
(Bette) I didn’t really expect you to find this so surprising. Relationships have never worked for me
(Alice) Well yeah, but none of those women were right for you
Bette smiles.
(Bette) And she is right for me. And not just because of who she is, it’s what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. It’s so fucking right. And I’m so fucking happy, and so fucking sure

I’m here! I’ve been waiting! Gonna read now. Whew!
Thanks, K. :))
Great to see a new chapter!
Still wonder a bit how they see this not as a committed relationship but if this is how it works for them, i am very happy for them.
Sad to read the story almost comes to an end.
Truly enjoy your stories!
Okay… so they have worked out that they are girlfriends indefinitely….. exclusive, in love but not committed. They can make plans together but not long-term plans. I’m not sure how they define long term but okay… perhaps it means not permenant such as buying a house together or getting married. They are fine as long as things are for convenience and not commitment. For me commitment is an expression of intent not a guarantee. Someone can say to you they will promise love you forever. They are expressing their intent and even pledging to use their best efforts to fulfill that promise. But there are no guarantees in life whatsoever. They are acting like a committed relationship just not labeling it as such. And by not labeling as such, they both can avoid their phobias of being in a committed relationship. They will both will be free to come and go as they wish and to lead the life they want to live. Just as in any committed relationship. As long as what they agree to is a matter of convenience not commitment at least in their perception, things will be fine. I guess my thoughts are how in the world did these two ever get to the concept that commitment was a trap of doing something they really did not want to do? I’m with Alice…. I’m not sure I understand. I’m not sure I ever will… but okay.
Thanks for the chapter…
Officially, “spring” is (sorta) here so good U took a much deserved break!!!
The missed calls, Tina taking too long outside… i seriously thought something bad was or had happened to Tina.
I originally had it that Tina left to go and pick up Helena and I realised it totally seemed like I was setting up for an accident! So I changed it but I guess the vibe is still there a bit hey? Sorry about that!
Hahaha yes! And i was thinking that the “accident” will knock some sense into tina about commitment! (Hihihi)
But then i read your notes, 1 chapter to go. (Aww,) We can’t squeeze an accident with just one chap to go.
Anyway, im great with the keys!
Great way to show how much Tina needs a key.
Great, all in love and Alice is confused as always ;)
I love them but they would both be devastated if they broke up so call it what you want they are already committed. Would love to know what causes Tina to be so afraid of commitment. What would happen if something happened to one of them and only family is allowed to visit etc?
