Chapter 19 – Job and Emergencies

Bette:  Does this office have a trash can?

    Holly:  I’ll go find one.

And off she went again. As she was gone, Bette cleaned the sides and the front of the desk. She cleaned the drawer fronts and the credenza. She then put her brief case on the desk and began to clean out the drawers in the credenza and then the drawers in the desk.

Holly came back into the office holding a trash can with a plastic liner in it.

Bette (smiling):  Ms. Billingsley?  Holly? Would you explain to me the house keeping process for the offices here at UCLA?

Holly:  Well, we have janitors who come by every night and empty the trash cans and give you a fresh liner. And they are supposed to vacuum the carpet every night in every office.

Bette: “Supposed to?” Does that mean they don’t do it every night? How often do they do it?

Holly:  Professor Glenn who used to occupy this office kept his door locked and the janitor did not have a key and therefore, this office never got cleaned.

Bette:  I see. Okay, first you will get a key to my office for yourself and you may get one for the janitor. But you should have your key in a specific location which in your absence you can direct someone to obtain the key and get into my office. I expect my office to be subject to the normal routine of having my waste paper basket emptied and my floors vacuumed. Now how often do they dust and clean the windows and the blinds?

Holly: I think they dust every night except they won’t move anything on the desk like picture or papers or books. And as to the windows and blinds, I think they do that only on request.

Bette:  Okay, I expect my desk, credenza and side tables to be dusted every night in the normal fashion. The cleaning crew should vacuum the sofa and chairs at least once a week and more often if necessary.  My desk chair should be wiped down at least once per week taking particular note of the head rest and the arm and hand rests. Oh, and the floors includes the area under the desk where my feet will rest. I am requesting that prior to school starting, my window be cleaned thoroughly. I also request that my blinds be removed and thoroughly cleaned as in dipped in a large tub of soapy water and each lever be wipe down, the rinsed and hung to dry and then when dry returned to my window. Or in the alternative, the school can purchase and install a new one. I would also like to request that my walls be painted before September 1st.  The color is fine, but the walls are extremely dirty.  The lamp shade is dirty. I will buy another one. I may bring in another lamp for the desk. I believe that I am going to need a new key board and mouse. And depending how old this computer is, I may need a new one of those. If there is a problem getting those things let me know. Now are you going to tell me how to use this phone which needs cleaning as well?
