Chapter 19 – Job and Emergencies

Holly:  Yes mam. I am sorry.

Bette:  Holly?  Just get my office cleaned up before school starts, okay?

Holly:  Yes, Professor Porter, I’ll get right on it.

    Bette:  Thank you Holly.

Bette sat down and began to go through her brief case and get out her files and things she wanted to keep here at the office. She again started to work on her classroom presentations. Her phone buzzed and she answer in a flat monotone – “Yes, Holly”.

Holly:  I believe it’s your wife is on line one. It’s a Tina Kennard-Porter?

Bette: Thank you Holly…(punching the blinking light) Tina?  What’s going on sweetie?

Tina:  Hey Sweetie, I just calling to check on you. How are things going?

Bette:  Well, I have an assistant Holly Billingsley and I am in my office which is a dust cavern at the moment. But I’ve taken some actions to get that corrected.  The meeting this morning was almost useless and I’m having more department meetings this afternoon. The one this morning was for all instructional staff for the University. Those only happen once or twice a year. I presume we will be going over the class schedule and get the classroom assignments for each class. And then later this afternoon we will have the graduate studies staff meeting.  I think that is where I meet my graduate assistants.

    Tina: Sounds fascinating.

Bette:  Right! I think I will be more involved this afternoon than I was this morning. This morning they did not say anything that wasn’t in the handbook.

Tina: What time do you think you’ll be home?

Bette:  Well, I think that the last meeting will be over at 4 so I be home about 5:00 or so depending on traffic.

Tina:  Oh good.  Then we can have dinner around 6 or 6:30?

Bette:  That sounds good. It’s almost lunch time. How is your day going?

Tina:  I signed the contractor’s contract and put a deposit of $100,000 on the work.  I think it will be finished by September 15th.  I’m going to try to set up a couple of meetings with designers for us on Friday.  Is that okay?

Bette:  Sounds good to me. Hey, no more than three, okay?

Tina:  Sounds right to me. I’ll try to get them to come here and meet so we don’t have to run all over town.
