Chapter 26 – INTERVENTION

“And thank you for your loyalty.” Bette was uncertain of his current intention. “I know it was difficult to do.”
“Bette, you have a chance to start over with her again.” James reluctantly let go of her arms. “She’s reached out. She still cares for you.”
“And I still love her. You know I do and that I’d do anything to protect her.” Bette closed her eyes, unable to hope for or consider a different outcome this time. In the end, all Bette had wanted was for Tina to be happy. To be safe. To be loved by someone that was worthy of that task. Even if Bette herself wasn’t that person, that was all that mattered to the brunette. Tina’s happiness. “Like . . . like I always have.”
“But Bette, she doesn’t need your protection anymore.” James told Bette. “She needs your love.”
“Oh, James.” Regret lined Bette’s long, sad face. “She’s had my love all these years. Every day. And you know that. I’ve never stopped loving her.”
“But Tina’s hasn’t known that.” James attempted one last time to dissuade the doctor. “Please, just tell her. Talk to her.”
“I can’t.” Tears welled up in Bette’s eyes. The truth of her own health stabbing at her heart. Even hope seemed to have slipped through her hands. “I can’t have her suffer any longer because . . . because of me. Because of what’s going on with me. I have to shield her from more sorrow. Even from myself.” . . .

Present Day Mid-Morning – New York City – May 2020 – The Park Hyatt Hotel – Roosevelt Conference Room
“Helena, wai . . . “The British heiress could tell by the tone of Bette’s voice that she was flustered, if not downright bloody angry.
“No Bette, you listen . . . “Helena cut her old friend off in mid-sentence. She was on a mission to convince Bette of what her actions today should be. “James reached out to me for the right reason.”
“And what fucking reason could that possibly be?” Bette barked into her phone as she ran her right hand back and forth over her forehead in frustration. She didn’t have the time or the patience for another discussion about the course of her life or her choices.

I saw the commercial and it was funny and i really would have loved it if JB was a bit more in it but she was great in it. Does she ever age, she looks more and more beautiful. A classic beauty.
Waiting for my wife, she has an appointment and I’m her driver, gave me the chance to read your update.
James and Helena trying with gently force to get Bette to see sense and talk with Tina honestly about the events years ago.
I truly understand Bette’s hesitation, especially since she was and really is genuine in her way of thinking to not bother Tina, to wish her a happy and loved life, a life Bette knew she couldn’t give her due to what happened with her father and brother and the responsibility to take care of the business and her now adopted children and now because of her own health issues.
On the other side, i think Tina should have had a chance and a voice all these years.
At least Bette will talk with Tina.

Bette’s character here is very stubborn & protective. All that’s she’s done the last dozen or more years is to help & protect Tina in her own way. It may not be the way that you or I would have done things, but it’s what she thought she HAD to do at the time & in the following years. I think Helena’s provided the necessary push to get Bette onto the right page and move forward. But you KNOW that won’t be easy for Bette & there’ll definitely will be angst.
Yes, Bette did deprive Tina of her voice in these matters – and she regrets those actions. We would all probably do things a little differently if we got to do things over again – those second chances & all.
So, we’re now set up to get to the next step – hope all goes well!!

Interesting chapter and good insight into the relationship and feelings between Bette and Helena.
Seems as if Helena’s patience with Bette about Tina has worn thin.
Hopefully, Bette will take her good advice and act on it.
Yeah, I think after all these years, Helena has grown tired of fighting with Bette over how she treated Tina and her stubbornness about them.
