    Chapter 3

‘Or, no, not her as such, just . . . not all that intensity,’ she said, her eyes fixed on the road.

A minute passed. She knew she’d have to go back for the phone.

Another minute. Her eyes began to sparkle as she followed the logic of the situation.

A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. What was that movie where the kid takes a day off school? Tina would know.

‘Yeah,’ she said softly, as she snapped on the blinker to leave the highway and take Western Avenue towards Hollywood. ‘Tina would know.’

    ***

‘She’s not in the office today.’

The latest receptionist was an androgynous, very young-looking Asian American with stern black-rimmed glasses and a ruby-red nose stud. Their shirt one that Bette had considered buying herself just the other week, from Emerge in Colour.

‘Not in or “not in”?’ Bette asked, with audible quote-marks.

    ‘Not in,’ the receptionist deadpanned.

‘Oh, okay, well tell her it’s Bette.’

    ‘I’m afraid I can’t do that.’

    ‘Why not?’

    ‘Because she’s not in.’

Bette stared. ‘Are you saying she’s not in?’

    ‘Yes.’

    ‘Right. But is she?’

    No reaction.

    ‘Or is she?’

    No reaction.

‘You do know I’m her ex-wife?’

    The receptionist folded their arms.

‘Well, I am,’ Bette continued, ‘and we have a child together, so you better believe that if I was here concerning a matter of life and death, I’m sure she would want to know.’

    ‘Are you?’

    ‘What?’

‘Here concerning a matter of life and death?’

    ‘Well, no, but—’

‘No, because you’d just call her. If you were who you say you are.’

Bette counted to five silently, then said, super-nicely, ‘I am who I say I am, but I forgot to pick up my phone when I left the house this morning.’

The receptionist’s eyes twinkled with amusement.

‘Look, just blink once if she’s in.’ There was no blink. ‘So she’s really not in?’

The receptionist held up their palms.

‘Well, that’s just fuckin great,’ Bette muttered, then sighed and checked her watch. She still had four hours on her parking. ‘When’s she gonna be back?’

‘I can’t give out that information.’

Bette rolled her eyes, then got a small box of mints from her bag. ‘Y’know, you wanna watch your attitude,’ she said as she tapped one into the palm of her hand.
