Chapter 36 – TRUTH
A cold chill ran up her spine and it seemed like her whole body shivered.
An equally cold sweat broke out across her brow and her head swam for a moment or two.
Bette could feel the blood draining from her long face.
She swallowed hard and took a couple of deep breathes.
She stared back at Tina. Her own eyes wide in uncertainty.
Bloody fucking hell!
What exactly did Tina know?
What had she discovered?
“Wh . . . what do you mean?” Bette asked in a low, shaky voice in response to the simple statement from Tina.
From her position across from Bette, Tina saw uncertainty creep into the eyes of her former partner. She noticed the pale pallor of Bette’s face and the slight tremble of her hands as they rested against her sides.
“Wait – Are you okay?” Tina suddenly asked.
“Huh?” Bette now shook her head in confusion.
“You’re trembling and very pale.”
Bette looked down at her hands and saw what Tina was referring to. She quickly shoved them into her pockets and attempted to resume a stoic posture. Jaw set in defiance.
“I’m fine.”
“Of course you are.” Tina rolled her eyes at Bette’s ability to ignore the obvious when she so desired. She squared her shoulders in a determined manner to carry on. “Alright then. Are you finally ready to talk? That is why we both agreed to come here this evening.”
Late on that Friday afternoon, Ashley had assured Tina that she would be fine for a few hours while her sister met with the doctor. She was as anxious as Tina for her sister to finally get the answers she had sought for so many years.
Now, Tina stood in tight black jeans, a light weight gold V neck sweater and black, ankle boots. Her blonde hair loose around her shoulders. Opposite her in the large apartment, Bette stood behind a low back cushioned chair in her usual fair in classically styled slate gray trousers and a sharply cut white linen shirt, open at the collar. A pair of black casual slip-ons adorning her feet. Impeccable as always.
“What is it exactly that you wish to discuss?” Bette looked at her with furrowed brows as she rolled her sleeves to just below the elbow in a familiar manner. In the process, she took a deep breath to calm herself.

The long awaited talk between them, still Bette was trying to avoid it but Tina didn’t give her the chance.
I do understand Bette’s reasons to ghost Tina but on the other hand she was moving to be with Tina. So yes i understand Tina’s anger and heartbreak as well. She wasn’t giving the choice to help Bette.
And now Bette is still struggling because of her own health, she denies herself the love she and Tina still have for each other. You can say it’s honorable of Bette to set Tina free to find someone who will love her and have a family with but Tina made it clear she only wants that with Bette, the love of her life.
Thank you for this chapter.
I hope life treats you and your wife well.
Hey pal,
Hope you’re doing well where you are. It’s been hot & steamy over here – YUCK!
Yeah, Bette just can’t seem to help herself & wants to deny herself & Tina a chance at happiness once again due to the bleak outlook for her illness.
But, TK is one determined lady, so hope is not lost yet.
Thanks for your continued support & advise.
Enjoy the rest of your summer – fall is not that far away.
Wow, so intense. Talk about stubborn – I just want to strangle Bette myself.
I know she’s trying to protect Tina again, but give the lady a chance.
Yet, I can detect cracks in Bette’s armor, hopefully Tina can poke some more holes in it.
Thanks for your efforts and look forward to the last chapters.
It was intense to write too!!
I have felt the same urges about Bette in certain instances in this story as well – you’re not alone in that.
This was Bette’s last big stance so, we’ll see who has some influence over her & what direction they point her in the next chapter.
Thanks for hanging in there.
Very powerful chapter. We indeed learned a lot.
To me, Bette’s just scared bat shit crazy because of her undying love for Tina and once again, a missed opportunity for them to rekindle their relationship because of her illness. She doesn’t want to burden Tina again and she’s trying to protect TK as she thought she had done in the past.
TK needs to just go after her and not stop until Bette tells her about her illness.
I’m sure you have that all mapped out!!
Thanks for the exceptional chapter and your wizardry with words and emotions.
Keep well and I hope your wife is doing better.
Hey, thanks for the wonderful comment & your trust in the story & me.
You’re right about Bette’s motivation to protect TK once more. But, she’ll have to face the truth about her feelings for TK & realize just how deeply she loves & needs her.
Much more coming your way.
Thanks for the mention about my wife. Fingers crossed.
The heartache here for both Tina and Bette was so sad. They love each other so much, but Bette’s so stubborn in her quest to protect Tina that she’s hurting her more.
I certainly hope she realizes this mistake and allows Tina back into her life.
Great work as always.
Hey JW,
Lots of angst in this chapter & love lost & hope getting a kick in the pants.
Bette’s goin’ get some much needed advice & an ultimatum or two this time, so look for a shift in direction.
As always, thanks for your support.
Hey Collins,
Loved this update! Loved Tina here, she was determined to get all the TRUTH out. Happy to see that Bette answered all Tina’s questions, and Tina made it clear she still loves Bette and wants to be with her. The next thing is for Tina to get all the answers about Bette’s health. Already looking forward to the next update.
Hope all is well with you and your wife, my friend.
Hey pal,
TK was the star in this chapter – super determined & unwilling to admit defeat with Bette’s words or actions.
The health issue is the next big challenge & TK will get some help along those lines.
Thanks for the remembrance for my wife.
Take care of yourself & enjoy the remainder of the summer.
This was worth our wait. Loved every word.
Tina has the heart of a lion and won’t give up on her love for Bette.
Bette has to give herself a chance for happiness and face her illness with Tina by her side.
Post again when you can and take care of yourself and your wife.
So glad you’re still with me on this journey of denied love & eternal hope.
Bette will a lesson in listening from someone she loves very much – that should kick start her to get her priorities in order.
Hopefully will have an update by the end of this month.
Hey Collins,
At long last I have got around to re-reading your lovely story!
It really is one of those I can’t put down. I’ve waited ages for you to continue this story! It’s been a hectic year for me and you by the sounds of it, but I am trying to catch up.
This story is getting better and better! What a conundrum our couple are going through.
Why, oh why did Bette just walk away all those years ago, didn’t she know she would have needed the support of the woman she has never stopped loving !
Why didn’t Tina ever get on that plane….she must of read about the death of Bette’s father and brother and know Bette would have needed her?
I’m supposing Bette’s illness is related to the China visit many years ago and hopefully her colleagues will find a curse for her to EVENTUALLY be with the woman she loves?
It’s truly heartbreaking what our couple are going through right now, they both need to stop being so stubborn and open up with each other. The way you have written this chapter is exceptional, you really are with them, willing them one and feeling the emotion of their situation through your words.
Don’t leave it to long to post! Take care of yourself and your wife ….. We are waiting for the next chapter !!
Hi Janice,
Thank you so much for taking the time from your own busy schedule to comment. This novel for me has been a labor of love – both for Tibette & London, my favorite city.
Yes, its a complicated story of hope, anguish & eternal love. Well, if Bette or Tina had actually seen each other again years ago, we wouldn’t have a story. Ha!!
The story is definitely in the last quarter & a few chapters are left.
And yes, you’re on the right track about the relationship with Bette’s work in China and her current illness.
Thanks for the kind words about my writing, means a tremendous about to us writers when readers appreciate what we’ve created & hold dear to our hearts.
Yes, my wife is doing better & a big surgery coming up end of next month – so fingers crossed!
I’ve posted the next chapter on AO3 because I couldn’t get access to this site until tonight – have no idea why – it just wouldn’t accept my password.
I’ll try to post it here now.
Thanks again & I hope you enjoy the next few chapters.
See ya soon.
