Tina looked at everyone and smiled shyly before grabbing the book.
“Atta girl!” Shane praised. “I’m gonna go smoke.”
“We’ll come with. It’s hot in here.” Alice said as she, Tayo, and Carmen stood to follow out the drummer.
“I’m gonna use the little boy’s room before I’m up.” Angus said.
“Yep, you’re next Angus P.” Kit warned.
“Awesome possum!” he said getting up from the table with double thumbs up.
Tina was gazing at the massive selection of songs Kit had as people milled about submitting their own selections to the lead singer.
“How you doin’ Tina?” Kit asked, a touch of serious concern in her voice.
Tina looked up from the book with raised eyebrows.
“Hmm? Oh, uh, I’m good. Fine. Why?”
“Bette told me what happened.”
The blonde’s throat went dry and she felt her heartbeat accelerate. She reached for her beer and took a long swallow. “How is she?” she asked the older Porter.
Tina breathed a small laugh. “I guess I’m still trying to figure out exactly who Bette is.”
“You will.” Kit said, a small smile gracing her lips. “She figured you would show up tonight. She just needs to clear her head for a little while.”
“God Kit, I feel so horrible about what happened.” Tina’s voice faltered. “I just wanna talk to her.”
“If there’s one thing you have to learn about my sister, it’s that she can’t be pressured. She took off to San Diego a few days ahead of schedule so she wouldn’t have to deal with questions or smart remarks from the girls.”
Tina’s eyes glistened with unshed tears.
“I don’t even know if we’re together. You know, as a couple.”
“You will be. You guys got this spark. It’s one of kind. But where there’s a spark, it is inevitable that you’re gonna get burned from time to time. Bette just needs time to cool off, that’s all. She won’t stay away forever. Hell, I don’t think my sister could stay away from you if you paid her.”
Kit’s words made Tina smile and put her mind somewhat at ease.
“Let her come to you. She’s wrapped up in her own head right now, but her heart will lead her back so you guys can figure things out. It just takes an abnormal amount of patience to deal with Bette Porter. Believe me, I know.” Kit reached across the table for Tina’s hand and squeezed it.
“Thank you, Kit.” Tina said.
“No problem. Now whatchu gonna sing, girl?”
“Shit, I don’t know, there’s so much to choose from!”
Just then, Angus returned to the table.
“I’m ready for my close-up, Ms. Porter.” He said striking a model boy pose making Tina and Kit chuckle.
“You’re on Partridge.”
Tina turned to see the girls making their way back in as Kit again took the stage and introduced Angus.
The music started and everyone started bobbing their head.

Tina and the rest of the Stouts whooped and hollered as Angus carried on playing air guitar during his performance. The rest of the night, the music executive decided to forget about Bette, and just focus on having a good time with her new friends.
