Tina felt her breath hitch as the first real smile in more than 24 hours found its way back to her face.
South Beach Bar & Grille – Ocean Beach, San Diego
Bette and James were laughing hysterically at a story James was telling about an early career gig mix up that landed one of his goth-punk bands at a hog-tying competition on a remote ranch and his country musician client at a vampire convention.
“You’ve gotta be kidding me?” Bette asked while laughing.
“I swear to you! Cody came back with bite marks from a couple of goth chicks who cornered him in the parking lot and he was convinced that he was one of the undead.” A giggling James recounted.
“And the band?”
“I’ve never seen rope burns that bad, ever!”
“Oh my god, that’s classic!”
“Yeah, I’ve gotten into the habit of triple checking each artist’s itinerary before sending them off.”
Bette shook her head, still chuckling.
“You need another Sculpin, ‘cause I’m gonna grab another Swami’s IPA?”
“What the hell, I’m on vacation, right?” Bette answered with a smile.
“How are those mahi tacos by the way?”
“Fantastic. You were right, this is one damn fine fish taco joint.”
The waitress came by and James placed an order for another round of drinks for Bette and himself. The band manager had yet to discuss the Stouts or what her business plan was with him, so as the silence took over the small table, James was beginning to wonder what she had in mind.
“So, are you looking for bands to do some jingles, or what’s your story?”
Bette smiled. “You think I wanna put your talent to work writing jingle ads?”
“I’m not really sure what to think. Why don’t you enlighten me, Ms. Porter?” James grinned. Bette appreciated his light-hearted approach. Based on the stories he was telling her, he was more interested in going to free shows and listening to the music live, as opposed to making a quick buck. She liked him instantly, and thought he could be a good match for her friends.
