    Chapter 7

    (Tina) Mmmm, good morning

    (Bette smiles) Good morning

(Tina) This looks amazing. When did you pick all this up?

(Bette) I went out earlier, there’s a food market in the town

Tina smiles and lays a gentle kiss on her shoulder. Her eyes are then drawn to a pair of crutches leaning against the wall.

    (Tina smiles) Baby, crutches?

Bette turns in Tina’s arms to face her.

(Bette) If you insist on going out today you can at least keep your weight off your foot

(Tina smiles) Where did you find them?

(Bette) You’re not the only one who’s resourceful

    Tina smiles at her.

    (Tina) I’m impressed

(Bette smiles) Well, I just thought ”what would Tina do”. So I found a random bar and asked around, and someone had a black market pair they sold me from their car boot

Tina laughs and they smile at each other for a moment.

(Bette) They’re on hire from the pharmacy. They have another store in Palma, you can drop them off there before your flight and get the deposit back

Bette shrugs as Tina smiles broadly.

    (Tina) Thank you baby

Tina leans closer and kisses her gently. She leans back and smiles at Bette.

(Tina) When I tell this story in future I’ll definitely be telling the car boot version

They don’t venture far, spending most of the day in the town and Bette convincing Tina to spend the afternoon reading by the beach. Having both finished the book they had brought with them on the holiday  they have since swapped and are now reading each other’s.

They have dinner in a cosy restaurant, sitting opposite each other at a small tucked away table in the dimly lit and atmospheric venue.

(Bette) So, back to Palma tomorrow

(Tina) Yes, what time is your flight on Friday?

    (Bette) Early, 7 I think

(Tina) Well I’ll drive you, mine isn’t until evening

Tina concentrates on her meal and Bette watches her for a long while, mustering up the courage to have the conversation they have both so far avoided.

She takes a gulp of her wine and then proceeds.

(Bette) We haven’t yet broached seeing each other again

    Tina looks up at her.

    (Bette) Once we’re home

Tina drops her gaze and looks down for a long while before raising her eyes to again meet Bette’s.

    (Tina) Bette this has been…

She loses her words as she gets lost in Bette’s eyes and the hopeful expression she sees there. She looks down again, trying to compose herself and takes a deep breath in before continuing, while still looking towards the table.

    (Tina)… beyond lovely

She raises her eyes again as Bette looks back with a look of concern.

(Tina) But I think we should leave things here

Tina’s words hit Bette like a slap in the face. She feels the wind has been knocked out of her and can’t believe that she could have read a situation so wrongly.

When Bette eventually breaks the silence she speaks softly and apprehensively, her confusion showing in her voice.

(Bette) I spend time in New York for work. I’ll be there next month actually

    Tina takes another breath.

(Tina) I don’t think there’s a future here, I’m sorry. I don’t want something long-distance or casual, meeting where and when we can. I’m an all or nothing kind of person, I guess

Tina again looks down and focuses on her hands, tightly held together on the surface of the table.

She looks up and again meets Bette’s eyes.

(Tina) Can we just remember this as a wonderful holiday romance?

Bette searches Tina’s face and sees such sadness there. She is so sure that she has seen in Tina all of the same things that she herself has been feeling these last days and weeks, and she can’t understand this sudden dismissive response.

Her pride though prevents her from pursuing the matter further.

(Bette) If that’s what you want

They stare back at each other for a long moment.

Bette eventually smiles at her, masking her overwhelming sadness and disappointment.

(Bette) Well then, two more nights together. Let’s make the most of it I guess

Bette returns to her meal and Tina continues watching her.
