Chapter 7

The following Saturday morning, Bette is in her kitchen and sits down at her island bench with a mug of coffee. She picks up her cell and places a call.

(Tina) Fuck!

Bette frowns and then laughs.

(Bette) Are you OK?

(Tina) Shit, yes, sorry. I dropped something. Hold on a second

Bette hears a scraping sound as Tina shifts something heavy, and a loud shrill noise in the background. Tina turns her attention back to her and smiles.

(Tina) Hi

(Bette) What’s that noise?

(Tina sighs) It’s a drill, sorry, it’s stuck on

Bette raises her eyebrows.

(Bette) Sounds safe

Tina smiles as she steps inside, closing the sliding door behind her and blocking out the noise.

(Tina) Sorry, that’s better

(Bette) What are you doing anyway?

(Tina) Well, it’s supposed to be a fun DIY project. I’m setting up a vegetable garden

(Bette) And how’s it going?

(Tina) Really really well, why do you ask?

Bette laughs.

(Bette) No reason

Tina smiles.

(Tina) I think the whole exercise may have been a bit ambitious for me

(Bette) Are you generally handy?

(Tina laughs) No, not at all actually, I just thought it might be fun

Bette smiles.

(Bette) Well I was going to ask if you wanted to go out for lunch, but it sounds like you’re pretty busy

(Tina sighs) Sorry, yes I think this will be my day

(Bette) OK, well I can let you get back to it

(Tina) Thanks, sorry about lunch, I’ll call you later?

(Bette smiles) Sure

That afternoon, Tina hears the doorbell and makes her way to the front door. She opens it and smiles.

(Tina) Hello

(Bette smiles) Hi. I ended up having lunch with friends at the Planet

Bette holds up the bag she is carrying.

(Bette) I picked up some extras if you’re interested?

Tina smiles at her and ushers her inside, closing the door behind them.

(Tina) You’re amazing, thank you

(Bette smiles) Well it sounded like you’re working pretty hard, I thought maybe you’d appreciate the sustenance?

(Tina nods) I do, thank you

They smile at each other and then step towards one another, wrapping their arms around each other and smiling into a kiss.

They draw back and Tina cringes when her eyes catch Bette’s dusty blazer. She brushes the dirt away and looks to Bette in apology, and Bette smiles back at her. Tina smiles and shakes her head.
