Chapter 8
Chapter 8
The following Friday afternoon, Bette is in her office finishing up a phone call.
(Bette) I can’t tell you how excited I am to be working together. I’ll have my assistant send through all the information this afternoon and then we can meet on Monday to discuss details. Great, I’ll speak to you then
Bette ends the call and sits back in her chair for a moment, closing her eyes and breathing a sigh of relief. She then picks up her cell and places a call.
(Tina) Bette, hi, everything OK?
(Bette) Yes, I’m sorry to call you at work, I have news
(Tina smiles) Well you sound pretty excited, what’s your news?
(Bette smiles) I’ve booked a replacement artist for my next show
Tina smiles broadly on hearing the obvious relief and excitement in Bette’s voice.
(Tina) That’s fantastic! Congratulations
(Bette smiles) Thank you
(Tina) And it sounds like you’re happy with who you’ve booked?
(Bette smiles) Extremely. They’re the partner of an old friend from college. They were very prominent a few years back but have withdrawn from the whole scene in recent years. I knew from my friend though that they’ve been privately creating some amazing pieces. It took a lot of persuading, and reassurance that they can trust me, but they’ve finally agreed to the exhibit
(Tina smiles) Bette that’s amazing
(Bette sighs) I just feel relief really. If I had been given the choice of the original show and this from the outset this most definitely would have been my first preference. I can’t believe it’s worked out
(Tina smiles) Well I never doubted it, you’ve done a wonderful job
(Bette smiles) I’m very grateful to you for keeping me from spiralling several times through this
Tina smiles.
(Tina) Well what are you doing tonight? Can I take you out to celebrate?
(Bette) I’d love to but I have plans with a few friends, we’re just having drinks at the Planet but I think it’ll turn into a bit of an impromptu celebration
(Tina smiles) Well that sounds perfect, enjoy it. Can I take you out tomorrow night then?
(Bette) Why don’t you come tonight?
Tina stops what she is doing and raises her eyebrows, and they sit in awkward silence for a moment. Bette cringes and rubs her forehead.

The lines are blurred. Very, very blurred.
Also very intrigued re: Helena’s response, “She’s not emotionally unavailable, by the way. So far from it actually. That’s the wrong description of her”. Hmm!
I love this story, thank again for another amazing post.
This story is very intriguing… I’m just not sure about these two. It is obvious to everyone that these two are very much into each other… their behavior is very much into each other… but they keep going with this façade that this is just enjoying each other in the moment with no attachments and no commitments and no promises of any future. I do not know how much longer this can continue. Whether they admit it or not, they are truly connected and a sudden unavailability of one or the other would be devastating to both of them. So why not face the truth and admit this each other? This is a game at this point… time to chunk the rules of engagement and just be the people they are.
I’m really enjoying this story. Thanks
Reading your stories is more pleasurable/addicting than eating chocolate
It’s obvious they are both playing a game to protect their feelings for each other. Something’s coming up that will make them both admit how they truly feel. I really like this story a lot.
