    Chapter I – Yes, I’m Ready

After half a minute passed, Tina charitably filled in the awkward silence with small talk about how she and Bette had been blown away by the views of the Grand Tetons and the surrounding valley while they had been on their morning hike.

Jade’s face lit up excitedly and impulsively cut into Tina’s description of a point during the hike when both she and Bette had been convinced that they had seen a bear wandering way down in the valley floor and had turned quickly to head back to the lodge …

“Oh my gosh, yes! This place is just so beautiful!” Jade exclaimed. “I woke up early to run in one of the trails that the lady in the concierge desk said had been laid out in the clearest part of the surrounding area, so you’d always have a view of the valley and the Grand Tetons in the background as you ran. And I snapped a few pics with my smartphone, but really, nothing quite captured all of this beauty, right?”

She was talking so quickly and breathlessly about her excitement over the natural beauty of the landscape that Bette and Tina found they had to focus not only on her voice but also on her mouth so that they could understand her.

They smiled at the young woman bemusedly after she paused to take a breath.

When Bette and Tina had met her yesterday while they were all checking into the lodge, they found her to be painfully shy and seemingly awkward around strangers. It took several prompts from Tina before Jade finally acknowledged that she was indeed the daughter of Tina’s birth father’s second cousin.

So this outburst was a nice surprise.

“Oh, do you like to run?” Bette asked, still taken aback by this new, chattier side that Jade had shown them. “Maybe we can run together tomorrow morning?”

“D’you think you’ll have time, babe?” Tina asked. “That group we’re joining that’ll be trekking to that lake will leave at 9, and I think they want everybody in the lobby area by about 8:45 or so, remember?”

Bette and Jade simultaneously rolled their eyes at Tina’s reminder, and saw that they’d each done so. They’d discovered last night that the various activities planned for the wedding party and other guests were being run on a military-strict schedule. They got their first taste of what was in store when Bette, Tina and Jade had shown up fifteen minutes late for the dinner, and Jade’s girlfriend, Ali, who was the chief organizer of the activities, had been curt with them about that all throughout the evening.

Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
